My father looked up in the Library in Waycross, Ga and found that four Dowling brothers came from Ireland many years ago and settled, three in Hoboken, Georgia, and one in White Oak, Florida.
My father, LeRoy Dowling, middle son of five brothers, is all that remains of his father's children. He lives in Hoboken, Georgia, enjoying age 82, happily.
My one brother was killed in a car/train wreck in Jacksonville, Florida in 1965, born in 1950. I myself reside in Jacksonville, Florida and have since my 1950 birth with no spouse or children. I have several cousins in Georgia,
Texas. Dowlings all, of course. Aother cousin lives in Yulee, Florida. Our Dowling branch enjoys moving about though I have predominantly stayed in one spot. I have another first cousin who, once she fniished High School here in Jacksonville, marred and settled to one place, as well, marrying A.T. Collins, Jr.
You mentioned Dowlings in several places but not here in Jacksonville. My grandfather Dowling worked for the railroad and came through this area a great deal. Evin Dowling was his name and he married Effie Mae McLean (some spell it McClaine). My father knows more and we could pass that along to you if you would be interested.
There is another strain of Dowling or two here in Jacksonville but if they are related to my line it would be so far back we are unaware of the connection. But there are a few of us here.
All the best in Life and Love, my very distant kinsman, and hope you continue to enjoy the pursuit of knowledge in our lineage. Sincerely, Martha (Marti) Agness Dowling, BA, RT(R)(ARRT).

Hello Brian,
Thanks for replying to my e.mail so promtly. Here are some estimated dates of birth of my grandfather and known dates of the more recent family.
My father William's full name: William Joseph Dowling born on 4th April 1913 in Dublin
He married my mother Sylvia Beatrice Murtagh born 5th January 1913 in Dublin: She was the daughter of a Corn Merchant called Stephen Murtagh. They had 3 children (myself) Gail born 12th August 1940. My sister Gillian born 7th October 1943. My brother James Joseph born 25th August 1948.
My grandfather James Joseph Dowling I think could have been born between 1890 to 1893 or perhaps a year either side. He was married to my grandmother Sarah Killmartin who was I think born in the year 1895. I could imagine they married in the year 1912 in Dublin.
Her family were also from Dublin, and I have heard they were connected to the bookmaker chain of Killmartins. I am afraid I do not have much more than these dates.
Hope you are able to find some trace with this information.
Thank you and will await your reply. Gail

Hello Brian,
Thanks for the information, and the address of the GRO. Should I wait to do anything on until I hear from you when you reach the dates of a better idea of my grandfathers birth date? I do have a fax, so I can send them one to see about getting the relevant information. How does one go about contacting the Church of Jesus Christ and the Later Day Saints for a copy of the index first or is this necessary? Maybe I can send a fax first and see what they can find out at the GRO. If they were able to get the information I could call in while I am in Dublin; but as you say I don't have time to pour through lots of papers as I am only there a short time. I am visiting some of my mothers family, and especially a cousin who will be visiting family from America at the same time.
It has also crossed my mind that my grandfather had perhaps several brothers and sisters. I am not absulutely sure , but I very vaguely remember my aunt Stella my fathers sister talking about an uncle who was a school teacher in England. He just might have been called William and perhaps a big probability my great grandfather having the name William Joseph like my father. You may already have got to his birth date maybe in the late sixties or thereabouts. This i can check later.
Thanks alot for your help.
Gail

Hi Brian,
I have not been able to make much headway at finding my grandfathers birth date. My aunt died the night I arrived in Dublin and it has been so hectic ever since. What with the wakw and the funeral and visiting everyone I have not had time to visit the G.R.O.
The only joy I have had is that he was buried in St Nahi's Graveyard in the Catholic section in the family plot. I rang the the office attached to the above and they had no detailsbut the fact that there was three Dowlins buried there in 1939 1943 and 1945. The last one I think was my grandfather. I have a faint memory that he died when he was 52 or 54. of a heart attack. THis could be then the 1890 James Joseph maybe,as there was not one in 1992/93
I tried to ring Dundrum Church. but they are closed for a week. Maybe it is best I write to them. If he died in 1945 there must be a registry of deaths somewhere. Have you any suggestions?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Gail

He enlisted in the 65th Regiment in England in 1859 and sailed for New Zealand in 1860 to fight in the Maori Land Wars. - [S707] SOURCE (Short):, Title: E-mails, Various, E-mail to Brian Thomas Dowling (1955-), Dowling, Citation Detail: From: patricia homan (mailto:email address); Sent: 15 March 2000 09:45; To: Brian Dowling; Subject: DOOLAN ; (3) Kia Ora Brian, Thanks you once again for replying. Patrick DOOLAN died in Auckland on 21st January 1887.He was aged 57 years. I had spent a few hours in Auckland Library reading newspapers for that period hoping to find a death notice for him, perhaps that would give me a clue as to his birthplace etc.. I quickly realised that the working class people of that day did not appear in any Death, Birth or Marriage columns. I had ten minutes left before my husband was to collect me so decided to continue to read this very old 1887 paper. I was engrossed in reading the womens pages and turned the page on to see an article titled SUDDEN DEATH IN ARCH HILL - I glanced at it as my family had lived in this area, to find that it was the story of my g.g.grandfathers sudden death! I still find it incredible that it popped out at me like that. The article went on to say that he had been breaking stone in the afternoon and came home for his tea . It seems he died from a burst blood vessel in the lungs. It mentioned where he lived, the doctors name, in fact it was quite a lengthy article. That is where I found he had been a solider as it mentioned that "he was an old 65th man and was through the Waikato War," also something about the Old Veterans Corps when he again entered the service. His old comrades were expected to give the old soldier a Military Funeral. I belong to the Irish Interest Genealogy group in Auckland and the lady who runs it sent a letter yesterday to say she had found a Martin DOOLAN in the Griffiths Valuations- BALLYBOY, Town of Frankford/ Part of Kinnetty Road.- This area was completed in 1853 - 1854 so it proves that the DOOLANS were there at that time. This could have been a father or brother to my Patrick. Hope your weather brightens up. My husband has just come back from the beach with five lovely snapper, so we will be having a nice fresh fish dinner tomorrow night! Patricia Homan

I do not have a birth certificate for him, in fact the only certificate I have for him is his death certificate. He was a Roman Catholic. I do have some details as follows. Regimental No. 281; Rank. Private.; Surname DOOLAN Patrick; Birthplace Frankford.Kings Co.; Trade. Servant.; Enlist.Date 05 09 1859. Age 30 yrs.; Discharge Otahuhu (NZ) 18.09 1865; Ship "Nugget"; This information came from a publication " DISCHARGED IN NZ" Soldiers of Imperial Foot Regiments - Discharge taken in NZ 1840 - 1870 - Hugh & Lyn Hughes.; The "NUGGET" left Woolwich Arsenal Dockyards on River Thames 02.03.1860 Captain Bond. Arrived in Auckland NZ 20 .06.1860. I have also been given recently an address to write to in England. Officer in Charge. The War Office Records Centre.Bourne Ave. Hayes. MIDDLESEX. In your opinion is this a waste of time? Yes I do have access to LDS records. We have two Family History Centres in Hamilton about 2 hours from here. I hope to get a trip over there within the next month. The other mystery is how his wife and one child got here. I cannot find her on any shipping lists so far, I don't know if wives came on troop ships in those days. He was also discharged with a gratuity, I guess that would have had to come from England. He has one granddaughter still alive - aged 94. His mother was Catherine and his father was also Patrick. He was my g.g.grandfather. Hope this information will be of some interest to you. Best wishes from sunny Tairua, New Zealand. Patricia Homan.,
