It is also thought that he worked as a station agent on the railway in Northern Ireland before he came to Canada. Does any of this ring a bell with any of your family history I have been unable to find out anything about his marriage. I believe he was married in Ireland. Thanks for any information you can give me. - Chris
2: Hi Brian: Thanks for your reply. The information I have is very sketchy as the only uncle Brian has left does not remember very much of his grandfather. The information i have is that the Brian who left Ireland was born in County Cork and worked in Northern ireland for a railway company before coming to Canada. Floyd says that he was Station Agent at an important junction between belfast ans Londonderry. Floyd also says during the war he visited some relatives near Enniskillen at a farm called Florencecourt but thinks these relatives were on his grandmother's side. Unfortunately he doesn't know her name. Brian's grandfather Thomas was the first of this Dowling family born in
Canada and he was born June 18, 1872. The children Thomas had were named, John Arthur, Frederick Lawrence, Floyd Douglas and Gladyne Mary May. I think they were Protestant which would be unusual for Southern Ireland wouldn't it? Hope you can make some sense of this I wish i had more time to spend on this as I want to visit Ireland someday and see where both our roots are. - Chris
3: Hi Brian: Thanks for getting back to me. Brian's Father was Frederick Lawrence. Thomas was married to an Ella May Turner. He was the first od this Dowling family to be born in Canada. I don't know Brian's wife's name but her maiden name may have been Coulter. Does any of this make sense? - Chris

Hi Brian
Eventually I did get through to your website.
Although we go by the name Dowling, with the variety of spellings, the Gaelic name is actually Dubhlainn as far as I can tell. That's a fair bit different to Dunlaing the Co.Laois name. Quite inconvenient really, because there seems to be plenty of info about the Laois Dowlings but not much about Dubhlainn.
My 1760s Michael Dowling was a Tubbrid man. Whether he was born there or not I don't know. Certainly there are only 2 Dowling graves at Tubbrid, only one related. At Castlegrace a few miles south there are 4. One is a memorial to relatives lost at sea in 1855. The other 3 I don't know who they are, although one mentions a Michael Dowling of Tubbrid.

I had about 1800 Dowlings on BK5, until my old computer got a virus, and my backup went too! That was about 4 years ago. I was so ticked off I didn't go near the Dowlings for several years! My brother has just found an earlier disk with about 1000 names which I plan on expanding on shortly.
Any advice as the whether BK5 is the program to use or not would be appreciated.
I have about 20 A4 pages of Dowling Families which I formed up from Baptism and Marriage details I got through WHS and Hibernian Researchers. I'll send that through to you if you like. I posted it to the Tipperary List about a month ago.
There are some possibilities on the Hearth Money Rolls. Darby Dowly at Rochestown, just a few miles east of Tubbrid. John and Michael Dowell at Neddans near Ardfinnan. When I looked through Laffans book on the Hearth Money Rolls, I wasn't quite up to speed on the variety of ways to spell the name, so I probably missed some others in the area. Even so if I had got them all, there's not much chance of positively making a connection with my mob.
Cheers Mick Dowling.

Guiding Star - The clipper ship Guiding Star was lost with all hands, 481 passengers and 62 crew, during late February 1855. The ship was last spotted on 12 February in the southern Atlantic Ocean and was heading into an area where large icebergs had been seen. At the time of her loss she was transporting immigrants form Great Britain to Australia.(SV Guiding Star (+1855)". Wrecksite.EU. Retrieved 15 October 2017.)
https://arbellablue.blogspot.com/2019/02/an-ill-fated-vessel-loss-of-guiding-star.html
On the 25th March 1855, on the coast of Brazil, a slave on his way to St Antonio Grande picked up a bottle from the beach. The bottle was stuffed with letters, from a Harriet M’Intyre, and ‘Alick, Annie and Maggie’, emigrant passengers on their way to Melbourne, Australia, on the clipper Guiding Star. They were all in excellent health, they said, and they spoke highly of the accommodation on the ship. They would be grateful, they wrote, if the finder of the bottle could forward their messages on to their friends in Scotland. The addresses, sadly, were no longer legible, and the letters could not be sent.1 This was the last anyone would hear from the passengers of the Guiding Star.
The ship had set sail from Liverpool in January with 546 people on board - 118 men, 210 women, 58 boys and 95 girls travelling as passengers, as well as 65 crew members. Entire families were on board, on their way to new lives in Australia on an assisted passage scheme, and in a wave of emigration powered by the Gold Rush. The high ratio of women among their numbers reflected attempts on the part of the authorities in Victoria to address an imbalance in the male/female population there. The Guiding Star was last sighted by the captain of the American ship Mercury, on February 15, 1855, as she headed into the Southern Ocean. Months later, a Victorian Government Immigration report noted the loss of the ship:
‘In concluding the subject of Assisted Immigration, it is my painful duty to State the loss of the ship Guiding Star, which sailed from Liverpool on the 9th of January, 1855, with 546 souls on board. She was last heard of on the 15th February, in lat 26° south and long 34° west, since which period no tidings have been received of her. The cause of this deplorable catastrophe can only be conjectured; in all probability it has been owing to collision with the ice. Many vessels reported that they had seen vast quantities of ice in unusually low latitudes, and some of them had suffered more or less injury in passing amongst these floating masses.’
Migrants at Queensland,c. 1885
The passenger manifest would have gone down with the ship, and so it is impossible to name all of the 481 passengers on board, although the names of the captain and all of the crew are known. Many of the crew were veteran sailors - some were not so experienced. The captain, Ayrshire-born William McClelland, was only 34 years of age and had limited experience of commanding larger vessels. The Guiding Star, built in St John, Nova Scotia, by W. & R. Wright, launched in 1853, and owned by Liverpool company Miller and Thompson (Golden Line), was on only her second voyage to Melbourne.2 She had been described in the Illustrated London News as ‘a noble vessel’, chartered for the sum of ‘£12,000 - an unprecedented amount, even for the best kind of ships trading to the golden regions’.3
As the year went on, local newspapers began to carry items on the Guiding Star, in less and less hopeful terms. In October, the Montrose, Arbroath and Brechin Review reported that ‘great anxiety is at present felt for the safety of the Guiding Star’ noting that ‘the vessel had a number of passengers from Dundee and neighbourhood on board’.4 The following month, the Fife Herald reported that ‘six individuals, all related to one another, left Methil Mill … for the purpose of bettering their condition by emigrating to Australia, whither so many have gone’, noting also that ‘fears are entertained that (the Guiding Star) is lost, and that all on board have perished; and the relations of these emigrants are in consequence in great anxiety and distress to learn the fate of their missing friends’.5 Later in the month, the paper disclosed that nine members of a Newburgh family - a Mr William Grimmond, mason, his wife, son and six daughters - had set sail aboard ‘this ill-fated vessel (of whose loss there can now be no doubt).6
Several ships had reported seeing large icebergs in the area where the Guiding Star was last seen, and 1855 was supposedly a very bad year for ice - at the time, the possibility that the ship had collided with an iceberg, or been trapped by ice, was readily accepted as the most likely reason for the ship’s demise. Other explanations have been put forward for the loss of the vessel, including that the ship may have run ashore, or fallen victim to pirates; mutiny and disease are also possibilities. Ken Mival, who spent eight years researching the fate of the Guiding Star, has suggested that the disaster ultimately resulted from an accumulation of factors, including the relative inexperience of her captain and his desire to achieve a fast time for the voyage, the financial motives of the Golden Line in trying to make money by reducing costs, and the relative newness of the Great Circle route to Australia.2
While it is impossible to know, no trace ever having been found of the Guiding Star, it has been suggested that she foundered on the night of February 20/21st 1855. The actual fate of the Guiding Star, however, remains unknown.

There you have it. Once I get around to putting all the tree on disk I'll send you a copy. Ditto with the updated family, currently on 25 A4 pages. The families left Ireland from about 1850, the first arriving in Sydney in 1852. The last to get here were my mob who arrived as late as 1875. Thanks for your opinion on software. I'll try and track down FTM. I've got Microsoft Access, I'll have a bit of a play around with that also. Cheers, Mick Dowling

'The Guiding Star'. John and Bridget Dooling, sons Michael, Edmund, and James, nieces Judith Ahern, and Bridget Glasheen were all lost at sea in 1855. (Not 1854 as the Lancefield Victoria monument States, nor 1842 as the Castlegrace Co.Tipperary monument states). Their ship 'The Guiding Star' left Liverpool on 9 January 1855 sailing for Australia. According to The Age newspaper of the 8th of September 1855, the ship was last seen off the Brazilian coast at lat.16S, lon. 34W, on 12 February 1855. The ship was last sighted at about lat. 44S, lon.25W. in about April 1855 sailing into the 60 mile wide bay of a horseshoe shaped iceberg, in which it must have become entrapped, and eventually sunk.

- Cheers Mick Dowling,

Hi Brian, First of all - it appears as though two Dowling families have been intertwined, and the births of children attributed to incorrect parents. Check out your listing of Bridget Glassen #4187. Bridget Glassen (Glasheen) was married to JOHN Dowling. Their children were: William, John, Michael, Edmund, James. John, Bridget along with Michael, Edmund & James died at sea. Their other sons, William & John arrived in Australia 19-5-1852 aboard “David Maciver” . William married Johanna Dempsey in Victoria 1856/549. Apparently no children. John married (1) Margaret Slattery in Victoria 1857/ 4073. Their son John was born in Bendigo 1858/14298. Margaret died 1858/4073. (2) Ellen Dempsey in Victoria 1860/1567. Several more children born. Johanna & Ellen Dempsey were sisters. I shall not do any more on this family as it isn’t related to my Doolings. Maybe someone else can update it. My interest is William Dooling baptised 5-5-1821 - the son of WILLIAM Dooling & Bridget GLAVIN. Unsure of their marriage date. However, their children were: William bapt 5-5-1821; Helleenam (Ellena) bapt 9-5-1831; Michael bapt 10-2-1834; Patrick bapt 1837. There was also: Bridget, Mary & Margaret. Unsure of their dates. Possibly between 1821 and 1831 ??? Baptisms appear to have been in Templetenney & Ballylooby, with a possibility of one in Brockea. WILLIAM DOOLING bapt 5-5-1821 Templetenney Co Tipperary. Tried and convicted 3-1-1847 at Clonmel, for robbery etc etc. (See The Tipperary Free Press 24-7-1847) Sentenced to 7 Years transportation. He went from Clonmel to Spike Island before leaving Dublin aboard the “Pestongee Bomangee”. Left Dublin 20-9-1848 - arrived Hobart 2-1-1849. Sought permission on 11-3-1852 to marry convict Ann Burke. Permission granted. Married Hobart 7-6-1852/667. This is my connection to the Doolings. Ann Burke is the sister of my gr gr grandmother. Both Ann & her sister, Mary were convicts. William died 20-7-1897/10065 in Spotswood, Victoria. His death is registered as “Dooling”, but he is buried in Williamstown Cemetery as “Dowling”. Ann Dooling (nee Burke) died 9-10-1891/16424 in Melbourne and is buried in an unmarked grave in Melbourne General Cemetery as Dowling. WILLIAM DOOLING & ANN BURKE married 7-6-1852/667 in Hobart Tasmania. Children: #1: William (William Augustus) born Hobart 12-7-1852/1572. Married Annie Ryan 26-11-1881/5016 in Nth Melbourne. Hope you can follow all this. I have records of all the above families and their children. If you want this info just let me know. As you can see, the name Dooling has gone through several changes. Doolan, Dolan, and settled on Dowling. My grandmother told me tales of the Doolings etc. There was an almighty breakup between the sisters Ann Doling and Mary Filbin. Ann had caught her husband William in a compromising position with one of Mary’s daughters. The thing ended up in Court; the very next day Ann & William Dooling placed a notice in the local paper stating they were in no way related to Mary Filbin and her daughter. This apparently was the last straw between the sisters and they, and their families, never spoke again. The things (and ghosts) we uncover when we enter family research!!!! Let me know if I can help some more. All the best for now. Joy.

1. I had about 1800 Dowlings on BK5(Brother's Keeper genealogy program), until my old computer got a virus, and my backup went too! - Cheers Mick Dowling,

- Cheers Mick Dowling,

I had about 1800 Dowlings on BK5(Brother's Keeper genealogy program), until my old computer got a virus, and my backup went too! - Cheers Mick Dowling,

1. IHS; Erected by John and William Dowling of Victoria Australia; In memory of their parents; John Dowling; Died 1842 aged 65 years.; Bridget; Died 1842 aged 60 years.; Their brothers; Michael Died 1842 aged 28 years.; Edmund Died 1842 aged 17 years.; James Died 1842 aged 14 years.; Their cousins Bridget Glasheen; Died 1842 Aged 20 years.; William Fraher; Died 1896 aged 60 years; their Aunt Mary Fraher Died 1881 Aged 82 Years; Also Judith Aherne; Died 1842 Aged 20 years 2. IHS; Sacred to the memory of; John Dowling son of Michael Dowling; of Clonmel Merchant and grandson of; John Dowling of Tubbrid who died April; 1841 Aged One Year 9 Mths and 13 days; 3. In; Loving Memory; of; The Dowling Family; Kate 1945; Philip 1947; John (Husband) 1949; John (Son) 1959; 4. IHS; Here Lies the Body; of John Doling who died; Janury 7 1760 Aged 84.; His wife Margt Goifr; died 7 .7. 1747 aged; 55 years. I had about 1800 Dowlings on BK5(Brother's Keeper genealogy program), until my old computer got a virus, and my backup went too! - Cheers Mick Dowling,

This is what I have found out so far....To start I married Lester Gregg Jr on June 1, 2008 so my last name is Gregg not Hornsby. Next...My parents Darryl Thomas Dowling ( Feb. 10-1949- Feb.20-2004) and Claudia Jane Shumate Lee ( Sept. 24-1951- still alive) married Nov.18-1970 divorced March 15-1974. They had two children Tracy Lynn Dowling Gregg and my twin sister Stacy Ann Dowling Thornton on Dec.14-1971. I have found out that my dad's parents ( my grand parents) names were Thomas David Dowling Jr ( Apr.-15-1911 -June 4-1991) and Ruth Phillips Dowling Brady (not sure when she was born) but she pasted away March 21-2002. My great-grandparents were Thomas David Dowling Sr (12-27-1871 -9-27-1950) and Margret Grace Dowling (12-6-1875 -10-27-1977) she was 102 when she died....I hope you can understand this......Ha Ha. Ok. My dad ( Darryl Dowling) married Cathy Dupre and they had my sisters Suzanne Dowling McKinney (3-15-1973) and Nicole Dowling (8-13-1974) they are both still alive...Cathy also has a son named Thomas Dowling (11-12-1978) who isnt my dad's son but they were still married and together when he was born so he has his name and is family but no real Dowling blood. So..thats what I've found out so far. I will keep you updated...
Tracy.
