Brian:
Thanks for the nice response to my message, especially for putting my own adoption in perspective with the practice of the Clans/Septs of old adopting others.
I really don't know much about my family's history, so I tend to focus on the larger picture of Dowlings in general and their place in Ireland and it's history. My father, George Terrance, was born in Chicago in 1922. He came from a large family but his parents were divorced when he was 7 or 8. He died when I was 17. His father was George Edward, but I don't know any more about him as he died a year before I was adopted and my father didn't speak much about him.
After my father died his brother and sisters really had nothing to do with us anymore, primarily because we are Protestants, which always bothered my grandmother Mary Dowling.
We once had a large family reunion in Chicago when I was maybe 11 years old. I remember meeting an adult relative who came to the reunion from Dublin: Paddy Dowling and his wife Bridie...he worked for the newspaper there.
DOWLING TARTAN; In some places I have seen reference to a specific Dowling Tartan, but have never seen an example of it - if there really is one. Do you know anything about that? I know family tartans are rare in Ireland, mostly there are county or district tartans...but a few very prominent families did have their own. I would dearly prize a picture or sample of that tartan - and would have a second kilt made if the material was available. Perhaps we could search for the sett pattern numbers and have it worked up in either art or a woven example. I'm interested in your thoughts about that.
Best Regards, "Strong and Distinguished" Jim Dowling, Michigan, USA

Brian:
You're right...that George Terrance Dowling (b. 04/13/1922) is my Dad...we share
that birthday (mine is 04/13/1954). His father is George Edward Dowling, who was from Chicago or immediate area, died around 1958 or 1959. George Edward was married to Mary Irene Werner (pronounced "Verner") who came to America from Germany(?) at the age of 3 years old, on a ship (don't know where the ship
sailed from or where it landed).
I've read somewhere there is/was a specific Dowling tartan, but I don't remember
where...there wasn't a picture, or description of the sett. It's not too late...why don't we design a Dowling tartan that utilizes colors from the arms and colors from their County of origin (Liex?).
I'll let you know right away if I ever come across the tartan, or anything else significant.
Take care, Jim.

Subject: Dowling Family Tree
G'Day Brian,
I came across your Home Page on the family tree maker site and I was wondering if you were still researching the Dowling Line.
I am a Dowling by marriage and have been doing Research on my husbands' family line, but have unfortunately come to a dead-end.
I am researching the whereabouts of the family of Margaret PHELAN, born in Ireland approx.1840. My husbands Great Grandmother, she had a son on the 21st December,1863, called Thomas Jones PHELAN born at Bodalla, New South Wales.
So how she came to be in Australia I don't know. Her parents were Thomas PHELAN and Margaret COGHLAN.
Margaret married George DOWLING ( a miner) on the 15th August,1868 at Araluen, New South Wales. His parents were Robert DOWLING and Mary BROWN. 20
I believe George Dowling came from County Leix in Ireland but have not found anything to confirm this.
If these Phelans or Dowlings resemble any on your lists I would be most happy to hear from you.
My e-mail address is dowlo@pnc.com.au Regards, Dianne Dowling.
