You have an interesting site and you mention that you would like emails if investigating any Dowlings, so I thought I would mention my Dowling family:
John Dowling, born about 1795 in County Carlow but he had his family in Blessington, County Wicklow. He married Mary Ferris of Blessington. They had the following children:
Thomas b. about 1833,
Elizabeth b. about 1836,
William b.1838,
Jane b.1839,
Richard b.1840, and
Mary Ann b.1842.
All of them came to Canada in 1853, settling in Hamilton Ontario, though most of them later fanned out into other parts of Canada and the U.S.
I am descended from Richard Dowling. I would love to hear from you if you ever have any news pertaining to my Dowlings or if you would like further information about them from me. Thanks, Norah

Thank you for your message, Brian. I was interested to know you have been down to Australia - my daughter lives there; married to an Aussie. They live near Horsham in Victoria but it is far off the tourist track so I doubt you were there. It is a very nice country. I lived in Melbourne for 3 years. There are quite a lot of Dowlings down there. In fact, one of the earlier members of my family was supposed to have been transported there for stealing a horse or cow.
Yes, that is my Richard. He owned a furniture factory in the small town of Harriston, Ont. In the 1890s and early 1900s it was the largest employer in the town - 55 men (some were apprentices).
Richard was mayor of Harriston 1889-90. He eventually sold the business and moved to Vancouver in 1910. Some of his sons also came to Vancouver, including my father. Two sons eventually settled in California. Maggie, the daughter by his first marriage, married a James Lee Rutherford,and lived in Chicago, while his other daughter, Mary, was married to Robert Scott and
they lived in Guelph, Ont. I am not sure what kind of information you want but I will happily try

You're right. It is like looking for a needle in a haystack, trying to find someone with an Irish last name in Liverpool prior to 1837!! I have no idea which parish they lived in and there are so many.
The reason you couldn't find Thomas on the 1881 census is that (a) he was in Scotland and (b) the family (Thomas, Margaret, Thomas and Margaret!) is listed as Jowling instead of Dowling. He is also on the 1991 census but his wife Margaret had died by then. He was living with his son Thomas in Glasgow. He died 3 July 1892. Anyway, if you unearth anything more I'd be very interested, of course.

Edward s marriage is a bit of a hit and miss affair without a location and such common names.
The odds are that Edward s marriage would have occurred before 1830 possibly in Liverpool. This is unfortunately before civil registration and so one has to consult the parish registers in Liverpool. There is no on-line source that I know of.
I ll keep the notes should I come across something. I cannot even find Thomas in the 1881 census; do you have any death dates?

All I know is that Thomas was born in Liverpool in 1830 (from his records as a Master Mariner later in life). He married Margaret Foster in 1860 in Scotland. I suspect he had a brother Edward. It's his parents' marriage that I'd like to find. If you come across anything that might match, I'd be interested!!
