RESEARCH NOTE

In 1915 the Allies sent a massive invasion force of British, Indian, Australian, New Zealand, French and Newfoundland troops to attempt to open up the straits. In the Gallipoli campaign, Turkish troops trapped the Allies on the beaches of the Gallipoli peninsula. The campaign did damage to the career of Winston Churchill, then the First Lord of the Admiralty, who had eagerly promoted the unsuccessful use of Royal Navy sea power to force open the straits. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, later founder of the Republic of Turkey, served as a commander for the Ottomans during the land campaign.
The Turks mined the straits to prevent Allied ships from penetrating them, but in minor actions, two submarines, one British and one Australian, did succeed in penetrating the minefields. The British one sank an obsolete Turkish pre-dreadnought battleship off the Golden Horn of Istanbul. Sir Ian Hamilton's Mediterranean Expeditionary Force failed in its attempt to capture the Gallipoli peninsula, and its withdrawal was ordered in December 1915, after eight months' fighting. Total Allied deaths included 43,000 British and Irish, 15,000 French, 8,700 Australians, 2,700 New Zealanders, 1,370 Indians and 49 Newfoundlanders. Total Turkish deaths were around 60,000.
Following the war, the 1920 Treaty of Sèvres demilitarized the strait and made it an international territory under the control of the League of Nations. The Ottoman Empire's non-ethnically Turkish territories were broken up and partitioned among the Allied Powers, and Turkish jurisdiction over the straits curbed.

5th Battalion East Lancashire Regiment
The 5th Battalion of the East Lancashire Regiment was a unit of the Territorial Force with their Head Quarters in Mill Street, Burnley. Lancashire, England. The unit was made up of A Company (from Burnley), B Company (Burnley and Padiham), C and D Company (Burnley), F Company (Accrington), G Company (Haslingden and Ramsbottom), Company H (Baccup), When war broke out in August 1914 they were based in Blackburn with the East Lancashire Brigade in East Lancashire Division. They were mobilised for war and moved to Chesham Fold Camp (Bury) for training and then proceeded overseas leaving Southampton on 10 September 1914, arriving in Egypt on 25 September 1914. The Division underwent training around Cairo and defended the Suez Canal against Turkish attack in February. In May the Division became the 126th Brigade, 42nd East Lancashire Division and went on to land at Cape Helles in Gallipoli, taking part in the action to capture the dominating heights around the village of Krithia. By August, the division had lost about 2/3rds of it's men through battle casualties, injuries or sickness and reinforcements arrived. The Battalion made a successful withdrawal from the Helles bridgehead and on the 28th December 1915 landed on Mudros and the returned to Egypt.

On 27th February 1917 the 5th Battalion landed in Marseilles and proceeded to the Western Front. They were re-equipped for trench warfare and entered the line at Epehy, as part of III Corp in Fourth Army. In September they moved north to Flanders and were in action at the Battle of Passechendaele for a short time before moving to the coast at Nieuport. In November they moved to Givenchy where they undertook the construction of concrete defence works. In 1918 they were in action on The Somme, in the Battles of the Hindenburg Line and the Final Advance in Picardy. The Battalion was demobilised at Charleroi between December 18 and March 1919.

20th Rifle Brigade
The 20th (Northern) was formed in accordance with an Army Council Instruction on 29 November 1915. The Battalion was made up of supernumerary Territorial Force Companies, formed from National Reservists who were used for guarding vulnerable points in Great Britain. The Rifle Brigade Battalion were posted for Garrison duty overseas in 1916. The 19th and 20th went to Egypt.

Citation Detail: Award: The 1914-1915 Star -,
Citation Text: a campaign medal of the British Empire which was awarded to officers and men of British and Imperial forces who served in any theatre of the First World War against the Central European Powers during 1914 and 1915. The medal was never awarded singly and recipients were also awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

The 1914–15 Star was instituted in December 1918 and was awarded to officers and men of British and Imperial forces who served against the Central European Powers in any theatre of the Great War between 5 August 1914 and 31 December 1915. The period of eligibility was prior to the introduction of the Military Service Act 1916, which instituted conscription in Britain.
