Thomas Whelan and Catherine Hamill were married in the parish of Bourney Clonakenny. Witnesses were George Monahan and Eileen Skehan.

On the 8th of Nov 1851 Thomas Whealin 30 M Labourer, and Cath Whealin 20 F Labourer arrived in New York on board the Ship David Cannon from Liverpool. (Mic 333/4/72: Microfilmed by Courtesy of the National Archives, Washington.) No children were recorded travelling with them. I have no proof this is them except for Catherine's age matching, Thomas's age does not match. Could this be them?

They settled in Ennismore, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada and had 2 children Eliza (Wheland/Dowling) and another child who died (to be confirmed). Thomas died within a year of arrival, so Catherine returned to Dromard with Eliza and possibly a second child.

They appear to have had a son James baptised 3 November 1846 in Templemore showing an address of Graffin. This is consistent with a first child after marriage in 1845.

Thomas and Catherine’s daughter, Eliza Whelan was allegedly born in 1853, however, there is a baptism on 4 March 1849 to Thomas Whelan and Catherine Hamill to dispute this. An 1853 Eliza baptism has a mother of Margaret Hamill.

There is an 1851 Niagra, Lincoln, Ontario census entry for Kitty Whelan aged 27, with children James aged 5 and William aged 3. All Roman Catholics born in Ireland but no other specific identification information other than a "W" next to Kitty's age which MAY indicate widowed. The census has no Thomas or Eliza.

Also, a Thomas Whelan was baptism on 12 March 1856 in Nenagh to Thomas Whelan and Catherine Hamel. This may be a child born abroad but baptised very late.

Catherine married for a second time to Michael Gleeson on the 4th of April 1853 in Templemore. Witnesses Michl Cormack and Margaret Hamill. They had a daughter Catherine Gleeson was baptised on the 13th of March 1854. Sponsors were John Carroll and Catherine Ryan.

A son Michael Gleeson was baptised on 0n 19th of June 1856, the sponsors were Michael Cormack and Margaret Hamill.
A daughter Sarah Gleeson was baptised on the 5th of October 1858 the sponsors were Michl Ryan and Cait Cormack.

The death of a Michael Gleeson (Farmer) was recorded on the 31st of Jan 1889 aged 95 years at Dromard. The informant was Michael Gleeson (son).

Hanora Morrissey was baptised in Templemore, Tipperary. (My great-great Grandmother on my father’s side). Her parents were Darby (Jeremy) Morrissey (Gardener) & Bridget Hanrahan of Dromard. Sponsors - John Gleeson & Bridget Gleeson.

Hanora's brother William Morrissey was baptised on the 22nd of March 1816, her sister Eileen Morrissey was baptised on 22nd July 1817. Darby’s may have worked at Lisduff House (less than one Km away). There are not many houses in the area that would employ a Gardner.

Maurice Dowling and Hanora Morrissey were married on 31st of January 1850, witnessed by Michael Mihan and Eliza Morrissey.

Hanora died 24 May 1875 - The apparent cause was from intestinal failure although the state record is more unclear.
