Written by grandson Tom Dowling:
Mary Anne was present when her husband, Thomas Dowling, died on Christmas Eve in 1941. She sent son Jer with their pony to collect the bosy from Roscrea.
Not yet twelve, son Jeremiah was now the man of the house. Jer gets a job with the county council bringing out turf from the bog, using their one pony, providing them with a small income for the family. Dromard was a one-bedroom house and with kitchen and living room where there was a settle bed that would be opened in the evening in which the boys slept.
This was during World War Two, althogh in Ireland we called it the Emergency as Ireland was neutral (at least in principle). Food was rationed and tea, butter, sugar, and oil for the lamps were hard to come by. Jeremiah told of how they would take the tea leaves dry them out on a flat surface and reuse them. Following World War Two, Ireland was an island nation where farming was a struggle, there was no industry of note to speak of and no prospects for families to remain.
In 1943, Mary Ann sold the house and approximately 10 acres in Dromard to Elizabeth Dowling O’Shea and her Husband James.
Mary Ann Moylan-Dowling then, for £150, purchased one of the gamekeeper's lodges for Lisduff House in Knockardgannon South, a gate lodge, from Mrs Mansfield in September 1943. This was about five kilometers away from Dromard. At that time, it was a two-roomed lodge, kitchen and bedroom, built around 1875.
Before Mary Ann and the family moved in there was an attempt to burn the house down as a grudge from someone who, perhaps, had hoped to get the house instead of us. It didn't burn down but, in the attic of the large living room, the charred rafters are still visible and I saw the scorching marks on the rafters myself when the roof was stripped in the 1970s for re-roofing.
It was seven years later in 1948 when Mary Ann decided to leave the family in Knockardgannon and travelled to England with a farmhand she had become involved with. This was when my dad, Jeremiah, was about 18 and Peg 16 had started working in the Pathe Hotel in Roscrea. Peg had to leave the job and mind the younger kids. I did ask Jer about it when I returned, and he said it was true I guess he didn’t want to speak about it earlier.
In the 1950’s England began an aggressive post-war rebuilding programme and there were jobs and money in the UK. By the end of the 1950s all Jeremiah's siblings and his mother would be living and working in the UK, like thousands of other Irish families. This was a pattern that would not be reversed until the late 1970s.
In the late 50’s Mary Ann engaged a builder called Newman to build a second bedroom and an entrance porch. That would later become my bedroom many years later. The house had no running water until 1958 when the water scheme came to Knockardgannon South. Before that water had to be taken from the stream at the back of the house!
In the early 1970s, the house in Knockardgannon had just two bedrooms and a living room. Mary Ann would come back from the UK for short trips during the 1970s. I remember Mary Ann’s big navy trunk that required two people to carry (she came by boat). It was a long journey from Nottingham to Holyhead on the train. The ferries at that time were a far cry from the service today. Arriving at Dublin Port and then to Hueston station and the train to either Lisduff or Templemore after Lisduff station closed.
Mary Ann prayed a lot; she was also very superstitious. There were always religious statutes in our house at the time draped with rosary beads. She would bless the crops on May Day with Holy water, and on All Souls Day November 1st she would light a candle in the window for the souls of the dead. She told me stories of the headless coachman who on some occasions she would see at night travelling down the avenue toward Ballagh Castle and her husband Thomas would be in the carriage. There were also stories about the White Lady who walked the piggery lane.
Mary Ann used snuff, which was not unusual for old people of that time, and she smoked a lot and occasionally drank Guinness. She had a bicycle in the shed which she used when she was in Knockardgannon to see her sister Judy and the Robinsons who
lived near the graveyard. She would also visit Lar Finn in Clonmeen; I was not sure what the connection was until I started this research - now I know Lar’s mother was a Dowling and most likely a relation that I have yet to research.
Mary Ann had a record player in her room, and she would sit there in the evening playing her records and singing along. She would sometimes invite me in to listen. I remember songs like ‘Kevin Barry’ - ‘The Wild Colonial Boy’ and ‘James Connolly’ - 'The Irish Rebel'. Like most people of her generation, she witnessed a lot of hardship, so it is not surprising that she had strong Republican views.
I’m not sure when Mary Ann moved back to Knockardgannon for the last time, but it was about the same period the house extension started. She was not as mobile by that time. Her biggest fear, which she spoke about a lot, was to be put in a drawer in the wall once she died. It is not uncommon in the UK for people to be dead for a month before they are buried.
Mary Ann, as I remember, could be jolly at times and liked to sing. She also had a temper which I saw from time to time, something that my older cousin in Nottingham noted too. A fact emerged at the time that my aunt Peg was dying of cancer; I was there on a visit to Nottingham and it was Mary Ann who told me.
Mary Ann suffered a stroke while sitting on the couch in conversation with a neighbour Ned (Doolin) Dowling it was about 9 pm. After some time, it appeared that Mary Ann recovered, and she went outside where she suffered a second stroke and was lying in the yard. Teresa and I helped get her up on a chair and eventually, we managed to get her inside and into bed.
Jer was on the road and didn’t arrive home until after midnight. The following morning, she was moved to Portlaoise Hospital her speech never returned and she died possibly a week later on 28 May 1976 aged 80 following a series of strokes; thirty-five years after her husband had died. Her funeral was the first time my uncles Maurice and Sean had been in Ireland for a very long time.

Written by Tom Dowling:-
John Moylan was born, in Ballagh Errill, Co Laois on the 19th of Nov 1885 to Patrick Moylan and Anne Maher-Moylan. He was baptised on the 22nd of Nov 1885 in Rathdowney. Sponsors William Kay and Margaret Lalor.
John married Margaret Ryan on the 21st of Jan 1896 in Rathdowney, Laois with Jeremiah O’Mara and Mary Ryan as witnesses.
John, a labourer, and Margaret moved to Rathdowney, living on Pound Street then later moved to Ballagh Errill. (1901 census)
John and Margaret had 3 daughters: Mary Ann, (my paternal grandmother), Born in 1896; Margaret born in 1898 and Judy born in 1900.
In the 1901 John, Margaret and Daughters lived at house 61 Moore Street, Rathdowney. In 1911 they were living at Graigueavallagh Errill, Laois.
John died 11 July 1945 in Portlaoise Hospital following treatment for a collapsed prostate.
John and Margaret are buried in the plot to the right of the Dowling headstone in Errill cemetery. The tombstone in Errill offers little assistance as there are no dates. “In loving memory of John Moylan, Ballagh also his wife Margaret. Erected by their daughter Julia and family.” As you enter the old graveyard through the gate. There is a low stone wall to your right-hand side. Just a short distance along this wall you will find the Moylan grave. Directly to the left is the Dowling grave. To the left of the gate several tall headstones mark other Dowling graves. Could it be that the size of the headstones indicated their wealth? Our grave was only marked by a small stone in the ground until the early 1980s when Jer my dad had a headstone erected.
In the 1970’s my grandmother would visit her sister Judy McGuire who was still living in the original Moylan home.
