Citation Text: Collated by Brian Thomas Dowling (1955-) for the Dowling One-Name Study 9-Dec-2020:- (1) Hi Brian, Ann from Australia here. I came across your website when I was searching for information about the Dowling family name. My mother (Vera) was a Dowling and some time ago I did a bit of research on Ancestry.com to find out more about the family’s origins. I think my great-great grandfather, Thomas Dowling, was born in Maryborough, Laois in 1828. He emigrated to Australia some time after that and died in Sebastopol, Victoria in 1870. My great-grandfather was William Henry Dowling and my grandfather was Sydney G Dowling. I struggled to find any information about Thomas’s father (possibly another Thomas) and then completely lost the thread. I was quite surprised to find Irish heritage in the family because I always assumed the name Dowling was English. I must say though, I am quite delighted at the find. Irish heritage is very common in Australia, I think mostly because many convicts were Irish and also lots came to Australia in the gold rush and the potato famine. My husband’s family also has Irish roots, being Leonards. I enjoyed your website immensely. There was so much interesting information to read. Well done! Cheers, Ann
(2) Also some information about my great-grandfather. The Sydney Gladstone Dowling was my grandfather. I have a photograph of the family as well. There is some contention as to whether my great-great grandmother’s name was Rosanna Meagher or Rosina Maher, so that trail is lost. Thomas Dowling’s father may have been George Alfred Dowling, who married a Lucy Cook.
I think you’re correct that none of these Dowling were convicts - they came of their own free will! They were around the Ballarat area which was a gold mining town so I assume they came in the gold rush. Cheers. Ann

Cheers. Ann

Consequently, I think there is a high probability that this John Dooling (age 42) is a duplicate entry for John Dowling (age 28) who is also shown at home at 106 Stradbally Town. Merging these two individuals awaits systematic search of Athy births.

Cheers. Ann
