Family-Placed Death Notice

James L. "Jimmy" Dowling, Jr., 67, passed away June 9, 2004 in Valdosta, GA. He was the son of the late James L. Dowling and Lola Mae Thomas Dowling, longtime Valdosta and Amelia Island residents. He graduated from the Darlington School, Rome, GA, where he was the captain of the varsity football team. Mr. Dowling attended the University of Georgia and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

After a tour of duty with the United States Army, he joined Dowling Bag Company of Valdosta, GA and supervised the company operations in Savannah, GA. Upon returning to Valdosta, he became President of Dowling Bag Company. Mr. Dowling was also a founder and President of the U.S. Bar & Grill Restaurants in Atlanta, GA. He served on the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Valdosta, and was on the Board of Trustees of Brenau College in Gainesville, GA. Mr. Dowling was a member of the Valdosta Country Club, and the First Presbyterian Church of Valdosta, and was active in many civic affairs in Valdosta.

Survivors include: his wife, Karen Bone Dowling, formerly of Columbus, GA; his children, Catherine Mulrain, Fernandina Beach, FL, Alden McGee and husband, Jerry, of Jacksonville, FL, James L. Dowling, IV, Atlanta, GA and Miles Dowling and his wife, Trish of Acworth, GA; step-son, Gil Russell, Santa Rosa Beach, FL; eight grandchildren, and sisters, Joanne Dryman, and husband, Talmadge, Atlanta, GA and Alexander Oastler, Lake Glenville, NC. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 P.M. at the graveside in Bosque Bello Cemetery in Fernandina Beach, with Dr. Brad Hicks of Wynnbrook Baptist Church in Columus, GA, officiating. The family will receive friends from 11 A.M. until service time at Oxley-Heard Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Dowling's name to the Bridges of Hope Trust, Route 2, Box 213, Homerville, GA 31634, Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors.
