Kate was born in 1848 in Portarlington on the border of counties Laois and Offaly in Ireland. She immigrated to Ireland after that time, and is first clearly identified in England in Todmorden in West Yorkshire at the time of her marriage to Charles Lawrence between October and December 1869.

Kate is shown in the 1871 United Kingdom census, with Charles, living at Aspden Terrace, Meadow Bottom in Stansfield in Todmorden. She would have been expecting at the time as their first son, Alfred, was born shortly after the 2 April census date and before the end of June. Up to the birth Kate was working as a cotton weaver, a low-paid job with working conditions that typically had little respect for health and safety of employees.

The family appears to have moved to Oldham in Lancashire. Between January and March of 1873, Kate gave birth to their second son, Edward, no doubt named after Kate's father. Shortly after this, Kate may have been still working as a cotton weaver.

Life for Kate takes a poor turn as the next time we come across her is when she is in Strangeways Prison in Manchester, apparently awaiting trial. The records, originally only for identification purposes, are not too explanatory but in 1875 poor Kate appears to have been incarcerated for threatening her husband Charles.

Aged 26 years, Kate is described as 4 feet 11 1/4 inches, only 6 stone 11 pound in weight, brown hair, gray eyes and a sallow complexion. Importantly, she has a cut in the corner of her left eye, a cut above the right wrist and has lost several upper front teeth. There is currently no information for how this came about. The cut above the right wrist may or may not be consistent with a suicide attempt. It may be too great an assumption, but there may be a suggestion of domestic violence in all the circumstances when put together. This would be at a time when, in Victorian England, men had a right to beat their wives (providing it was with a stick no more than the thickness of a thumb, hence the saying "rule of thumb").

Kate appears to have been in prison from June 1875 and was shown then as having "no settled home" suggesting some domestic issues. Later entries show her as living in Princess Street.

Between January and March 1876, when Kate appears to be still in prison, Charles Lawrence marries Mary Ann Hughes in Sudbury in Suffolk a considerable distance from Lancashire. It is pure conjecture but could this be to hide a bigamous marriage? Or just to be as far away from Kate as they can manage! At present there is no evidence of a divorce and Kate was Roman Catholic so may not have entertained the notion.

It is worth adding to this circumstantial tale that Mary Ann Hughes gives birth to their son William according to the census in 1877 after they were married. Without ordering certificates the nearest likely record would be the William Lawrence born between July and September 1876 in Oldham indicating conception around the marriage time.

On the 12 September 1877, it appears the court case is finally dealt with at court and it appears she was found or pleaded guilty, and it is unclear whether her custody was continuous or in separate blocks. The court required some sureties for her release and the payment of 15 shillings and 1 pence costs but Kate was unable to pay so was give 7 days imprisonment. As she had already been in custody her release may have been immediate but certainly within weeks of her release her second son Edward dies.

What happened to Kate after that point is not known and there are a number of index entries for deaths of Catherine Lawrence that it may be an expensive process to identify the exact one. Death certificates may also give no indication of a person's background sufficient to correlate them to other facts.
