Stacey G. Woolley, great-great grand nephew of Peter Fenelon , on 16 March 2025, says, "The 1881 will of my 3-greats grandmother, Jane Woolley (1802 - 1881) mentions both girls, her granddaughters, as having the surname Dowling. Therefore, both were yet living and unmarried in 1881; however, the 1881 will mentions Anna Dowling (who received $200) and another granddaughter, Margaret F. Dowling (who received $300), both the offspring of daughter Jane Dowling, deceased. I assume that the “Catherine” F. Dowling” in your pedigree is in fact Margaret F. Dowling. What do you think? Do you have information to the contrary? (Many a woman named Margaret has gone by a different first name. Indeed, Jane Woolley (1802-1881) went by “Mary Ann” because her mother, and a sister, were named Jennet.) I did not know about Thomas W. Dowling (1851-1872). I will do more research into him."

Citation Detail: From: Stacey Woolley ; Sent: 16 March 2025 18:21; To: email address; Subject: Pedigree; Hello Brian, and a Happy St. Patrick’s Day eve to ya! I cannot tell you how excited I am to make your acquaintance. The information you posted has provided previously unknown data for my family tree. (You and I must be some sort of distant cousins.) Peter Fenelon Dowling (1819 - 1863) was married to my great-great-grand aunt, Jane Woolley (1830? says findagrave - 1863). I was just at Rose Hill cemetery in Bloomington, Indiana, where I learned that the cemetery’s records regarding Jane and Peter Dowling are wrong. They have Peter and Jane Dowling listed as “Dowlen,” also a good Irish name, but incorrect. (I am in the process of having the records corrected.) In 2018, the Monroe County (Indiana) Historical Society sent me photos of Peter and Jane's headstones, which happily look the same today. The headstones make clear that the surname is Dowling, not Dowlen. The MCHS researcher who worked with me remarked that it was strange that no record of these two graves existed in any of their data bases. Now we know. Rose Hill has them as Dowlen. Jane W. (for Woolley) Dowling was born in Cheviot, Ohio (an independent village surrounded by Cincinnati) to William and Jane Craig Woolley, my 3-greats grandparents. Jane Woolley Dowling had seven siblings, four of whom also removed to Bloomington in the mid-19th century and three of whom are buried there. A fifth sibling, Civil War veteran Thomas Woolley, died in Bloomington of dysentery while visiting his kinfolk. Of some interest to you may be the following information about the daughters of Peter and Jane Dowling. The 1881 will of my 3-greats grandmother, Jane Woolley (1802 - 1881) mentions both girls, her granddaughters, as having the surname Dowling. I will do more research into him. Is there anything you can share with me about him? Finally, findagrave has a nice obit for Peter Fenelon Dowling at his memorial page. Check it out. I look forward to hearing from you, Stacey Woolley,

---===oOo===---
Kindly provided by Stacey Wooley 22 March 2025:-
From the Sullivan Democrat Dec. 11, 1872:
A PRINTER FALLS FROM A STAIRWAY AND FRACTURES HIS SKULL
Last Saturday night about ten o'clock policeman Shoemaker found a young printer named Thomas W. Dowling, a nephew of Col. Thomas Dowling, lying in the alley north of the Express printing office in an unconscious condition. The policeman procured aid and carried him to his boarding house where a physician was sent for. The physician called did not think there was anything much the matter as he said he would call in an hour. When he again called he made an examination discovering that his skull was badly fractured. He lingered until fifteen minutes after two o'clock yesterday evening when he expired.
Coroner W. D. Mull summoned a jury which after a careful hearing rendered the following verdict: We the undersigned jurymen being duly empannelled and sworn do find that Thomas W. Dowling came to his death by an unavoidable accident in falling from a stairway.
Col. Dowling took charge of the remains and will take them to Bloomington, Ill. (sic), for interment.
---===oOo===---
From the Terre Haute Evening Gazette, Dec. 9, 1872:
Saturday night, about half past ten o'clock, calls for police were heard from the alley between Cory & Co.'s and Printing House Square. The call was answered by officer Shoemaker, who discovered Thomas W. Dowling, Jr. (sic), lying in a pool of blood, and totally unconscious.
The unfortunate young man was taken to his boarding house, first door north of the Filbeck house, where his wounds were dressed by Dr. Young who, upon making an examination, discovered that the patient was suffering from fracture of the skull. Members of the Typographical Union, of which Dowling was a member, attended him during the night, and when it was found that his case was hopeless, his uncle, the Hon. Thomas Dowling, was summoned to his bedside, who attended at once and telegraphed the sister of his nephew, in Ohio, the facts, and also his guardian, in the north part of this State.
The young man survived until two o'clock P.M., yesterday, when he expired, not having been conscious from the time he was discovered, and it is presumed he never knew what had befallen him.
Col. Dowling left word that the remains be prepared for interment, and that they have a first-class burial, at his expense if necessary. Coroner Mull being notified, summoned a jury and held an inquest, coming to the conclusion that deceased met his death by accidentally falling from the upper landing of the outside stairway leading to the newspaper composing room in Printing House Square. Being very tall, by some misstep, he must have toppled over the railing form the landing above, falling on the back of his head upon a stone below, with the above results.
Deceased was an orphan, and we believe has but one sister living, who has been summoned to attend the last sad rites of burial.
---===oOo===---
From the Terre Haute Saturday Evening Mail of Dec. 14, 1872:
Sad Accident --- On Saturday night last Thomas W. Dowling, a printer, was found by a policeman in the alley just below the top of the outside stairs leading to the second story of the "Printing House." On taking him to his boarding house it was found that his skull was fractured, and death ensued at two o'clock the following afternoon. On Tuesday the members of the Typographical Union deposited his remains in the cemetery. Poor Dowling --- of a kind and generous disposition, of neat and genteel personal appearance, unassuming, retiring, even to bashfulness, industrious and careful printer --- he was his own worst enemy. His industry is shown by the fact that in The Mail office, where he was temporarily employed, he prepared his "case" Saturday afternoon and requested "copy" in time for an early start on Monday morning --- little dreaming that "Monday morning" would never more come to him. He was intoxicated Saturday and it it supposed fell from top of the outside stairs to the ground below. His sad death should be a terrible warning to his late companions and all young mechanics who are disposed to squander their hard week's earnings in a Saturday night debauch, to the certain ruin of body and soul.

Citation Detail: Articale for DOWLING, JOHN; Obituary in Washington Pilot Newspaper edition Volume 41, Number 27, dated 6 July 1878; The item is an obituary for John Dowling who, according to the obituary, died June 20, 1878, aged 71. If the stated age is accurate, John's birth year would not be 1808, as you have it, but 1807, or even 1806. The obituary says that his remains were interred at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Washington, DC. I phoned Mt. Olivet, and they confirmed that John Dowling, who died June 20, 1878 is buried there; but that's not the main reason I called the cemetery office. The obituary also said the following: "The remains were interred at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, where, agreeable to his request, his father and mother's remains will shortly be removed from the old St. Patrick's burying-ground, where they were laid years ago." Mt. Olivet says they have no record of a Peter or Katherine Dowling; however, the historian at Congressional Cemetery on Capital Hill in DC told me that Mt. Olivet might not have a record, as bookkeeping in those days was spotty. The historian said that at Congressional Cemetery, there are many graves the occupants of which are unidentified. Apparently, many Irish workers were imported to construct government buildings in the early days of the Republic. Many died in humble circumstances and were buried in graves that were not documented. I have no reason to disbelieve what appears in the Pilot obituary with respect to Peter and Katherine Dowling. St. Patrick's in DC was founded in 1794, when George Washington was still living. The current church building dates from the late 19th century, and is not in the same location as the first structures, which were located at 10th and E streets, NW. The old St. Patrick's burying-ground must have been, and might yet be, near or at that location. I think the fact that Peter and Katherine Dowling were buried there is a great bit of information, and may eventually lead us to learning death dates for both.,

Repository: Boston College Libraries,
Citation Detail: Articale for DOWLING, JOHN; Obituary in Washington Pilot Newspaper edition Volume 41, Number 27, dated 6 July 1878; The item is an obituary for John Dowling who, according to the obituary, died June 20, 1878, aged 71.
