Find a Grave Obituary (as at 11 December 2023):
Elmo Dowling passed away November 5, 2014 in Gainesville after a lengthy struggle with dementia and related complications. He was born March 31, 1925, in New River, FL to Corrie and Joe Lee Dowling. He grew up in Live Oak, becoming an Eagle Scout and playing semi-pro baseball.
Elmo joined the Coast Guard during World War II and returned to attend the University of Florida, earning a Master's degree in Agriculture and a Professional Engineering license. The first part of his career was diverse; managing gladiola farms, teaching at UF's College of Agriculture, and becoming the National Sales Manager for LR Nelson Manufacturing Corporation. He spent the last two decades of his career as the owner-operator of AWF, an irrigation equipment company.
Elmo is survived by his four children; Terry Lee Dowling Knight (Bill) of Lakeland, James Edward Dowling of Gainesville, Joseph Everett Dowling Soka (Christina) of Chattanooga, and Mary Beth Dowling of Atlanta; nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Betsy Myer Dowling, and sisters Vivian Dowling Holden and Agnes Lucille Dowling. A graveside service was held at Forest Meadows Memorial Park East in Gainesville on November 11, 2014.

Obituary Published in Orlando Sentinel on August 14, 2009:
DOWLING, BETSY MYER 81, of Gainesville, passed away Aug. 11, 2009 at Harbor Chase. Mrs. Dowling was born in Ft. Myers and moved to Gainesville in 1956 from Jacksonville. She was a business manager for L.R. Nelson Irrigation for 30 years and also a sales associate for Casual Corners for 16 years. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Marshall Everett and Gladys Myer; brothers, Terrance Myer, Claude Myer, and Charles Myer.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, St. Elmo Dowling; children, Terry Knight (Bill) of Chiefland, Joseph Dowling Soka (Christina) of Bristol, TN, Ed Dowling of Winter Garden, FL, Mary Beth Dowling of Vancouver, WA; brothers, Everett Myer (Virgie) of Knoxville, TN and Richard Myer (Shirley) of Portland, OR; sisters-in-laws, Ruby Myer of Atlanta, GA, Rebecca Myer, of Raleigh, NC and Carol Myer of Wauchula, FL; grandchildren, Peter Knight (Amanda), Deborah Knight, Kristin Knight, Ryan Dowling Soka, Joel Dowling Soka, James D. Carter, Jessica Carter Slaughter, John Carter, Katti Carter; and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009 at 10 a.m. at Forest Meadows Memorial Park East, 3700 SE Hawthorne Rd., Gainesville, FL with Rev. Joseph Dowling Soka officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Forest Meadows Funeral Home, 725 NW 23rd Ave., Gainesville, FL.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Haven Hospice or Trinity United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the care of Forest Meadows Funeral Home, Cemeteries and Crematory. Please sign the guestbook at www.forestmeadowsfh.com.
