Written by Tom Dowling:-

Denis Tierney was born 28 October 1898 in Kyleahaw, Rathdowney, Laois, Ireland, the son of Francis Tierney and Julia Dunne-Tierney.

Denis married Teresa Gaffney on the 15th of February 1939 at Rathdowney Roman Catholic Church, witnessed by Nellie Gaffney and Thomas Tierney.

Denis was employed at Lisduff Quarry, and they lived at the Terrace, under Lisduff Quarry, a row of corrugated tin buildings provided for quarry workers in the 1930s.

My Tierney grandparents continued to live there in the tin house (hut) for most of their married life it was referred to as The Terrace or Lisduff Terrace. My early childhood memories were of about 12 tin houses in all, but not all of them were occupied. We would generally visit on a Sunday afternoon. My Grandparent’s house was tiny, the walls were corrugated iron on the outside. The roof was corrugated with a little tin pipe for a chimney.

Entering the front door you walked into a living room, there was a small stove which I remember my grandfather putting in logs and turf. This was the only heating in the house as far as I remember. Two small bedrooms were leading off the main living room. To the rear, there was a small kitchen scullery with a door out to the back of the terrace. The huts had no running water but there was a pump about 100 meters away by a large Chestnut tree.

For children, the quarry area was a place of adventure and I have fond memories from that time. The huts faced the Templemore Road and the railway line, about 5 or 6 meters elevated above the road level. There was, at that time, a forest of mature trees all around and leading up the side of the quarry. Several narrow paths went up a steep incline when you reached the top it opened into the Quarry which was a big open space with a high cliff of rock. There were large industrial machines scattered about along with rusty old machines not in use. There were also lots of wild goats and the older boys (Grogan’s) who lived in the quarry houses would sometimes bring down a goat from the wooded area to show the younger children

Later Denis or 'Din' would set up his own bicycle shop in a dis-used hut halfway up the quarry. His bicycle workshop was up a steep path above the terrace houses among the trees. He gave me my first bike when I was about 8 years of age in 1972.

I remember Din as a lightly built man with a stoop when I knew him. Both Din's wrists had been broken and healed badly during his years of quarrying and he suffered from Dupuytren contracture where thickened tissues may develop into a hard lump, a condition in which one or more fingers become permanently bent in a flexed position. Over time two or more fingers permanently curled towards his palm.

Din and Mary had 2 children in that tin hut: a son Francis was born in 1940 and a daughter Teresa (my mother) was born on the 10th of April 1941. It was around 1975 before Din and Mary finally moved into a new council house in School Road, Errill, and later the estate was later renamed Tierney Park in his honour.

Din had deep republican beliefs, I imagine the murder of his Father Philip left its mark. He was a very active man in local and national politics, and he was a founding member of Finna Fail in Laois. Din would cycle the country to build the party. A well-read man in terms of history, and Irish culture, he was a fluent Irish speaker, as was my mother.

My grandfather Din was a quiet-spoken small frail man at least when I knew him. He spoke slowly but with purpose, and had a sharp wit, he would often drop in an old Irish saying to support his point.

An article in the Leinster Express from 1971: described Din as “A wiry man and tough and in his younger day he thought nothing of cycling regularly from Laois to West Cork and back”. Din said, “He had not missed a Finna Fail Ard Feis in more than 40 years”.

On 22nd of November 1987 Denis Tierney died at Portlaoise Hospital aged 81 years. The cause of death was Cardiac Failure and Disease of Carcinoma of the Prostate.

-

Leinster Express Din Tierney of Errill obituary stated his death occurred at the county hospital Portlaoise where he had been for a week. The deceased who was 81 years had not been in good health for some time. Despite his ill health Din Tierney was active up to a few weeks before his death. He was the secretary of the Borris in Ossary Finna Fail Cumman. He devoted many years of his life working in the interest of the Finna Fail party travelling the country. He was highly respected within the party and by his opponents and his only interest in doing so was to help all people.

In his early years, he was also a member of the Land League. His passing was of great sadness to his relatives, the local community and large circle of friends. The attendance at his removal from Portlaoise and Errill Cemetery bore ample testimony to the high esteem he was held.

A guard of honour by members of the Errill, Borris in Ossary and Laois Final Fail party were present. Also in attendance was Mr. PJ Lalor TD & MEP. Senator Liam Hyland, Senator Mary Harney, Liam Lawlor TD and members of Laois County Council. Sympathy is extended to his wife Mary, son and daughter, sister, relatives, and friends.

On the 27th of March 1998 Mary Tierney Died aged 84 years. Cause of death was shown as congestive heart failure.

Written by grandson Tom Dowling:

Mary Gaffney was born on 11 July 1913 in Derryvorrigan, Aghaboe, Laois, Ireland to Thomas Gaffney and Teresa Doyle-Gaffney.

Denis married Teresa Gaffney on the 15th of February 1939 at Rathdowney Roman Catholic Church, witnessed by Nellie Gaffney and Thomas Tierney.

Denis was employed at Lisduff Quarry, and they lived at the Terrace, under Lisduff Quarry, a row of corrugated buildings provided for quarry workers.

For kids, the quarry area was a place of adventure and I have fond memories from that time.

Later Denis or 'Din' would set up his own bicycle shop in a dis-used building halfway up the quarry.

Din and Mary had 2 children in that tin hut: a son Francis was born in 1940 and a daughter Teresa (my mother) was born on the 10th of April 1941. It was around 1975 before Din and Mary finally moved into a new council house in Errill.

Mary, or Pol as many of her Gaffney family called her, was always kind to me and often told me I was a good-looking boy. I remember her as a jolly woman who laughed a lot. Her cousin Myra Doyle from Castletown was generally with her on a Sunday evening and sometimes we would be there. The two women would have such a good chat and a laugh.

We spent many happy times with Din and Mary in Lisduff Terrace, where they lived, and she always had cake or biscuits for us when we visited.

Mary would cycle over to see my mom sometimes, it was less than 3km across Lisduff Lane. She had a sister Daisy and two brothers who also lived in Errill.

Later in life, Mary became a bit of a hypochondriac she always had complaints and I know it annoyed my mother who had the extra burden of visiting her daily. I often heard she could not sleep and perhaps that was true.

Following her husband Din’s death on 22 November 1987, Mary although very alert in conversation had given up living. She complained about pains in her knees and rarely went out, which meant more work for my mom. She was on numerous pills for different conditions. My brother Dinny went to stay with her when he was about 10 years old until he went to secondary school.

When she was about 80 years of age, Mary had one knee replacement at Cappa Hospital in Dublin. It proved to be a painful surgery and she decided not to have the second knee done. On the 27th of March 1998 Mary Tierney Died aged 84 years. Cause of death was shown as congestive heart failure.

Written by Tom Dowling:-

I never heard that much about Ned growing up. His family (not him) were at my grandfather's funeral in 1979 but I was too young to ask anything. My uncle Frank said they lived on the Malahide Road near Clontarf and that the house was sold several years ago. So, I guess the next-generation Tierney family moved on.

Ned was a carpenter who was an official in the carpenter's union and worked in Ardmore Studios for a short time. (Mick Deegan Construction Manager at Ardmore Studios, Mick and I had been friends for almost 30 years).

Written by Tom Dowling:-

John or Jack Tierney was born on 11 October 1901 to Francis Tierney and Julia Dunne-Tierney.

He lived at the family home in Knocklardgannon. The house was described as a house of 2 rooms with 3 windows to the front and a roof made of thatch. The house was on the railway side of Templemore Road, and the new owner knocked the house down in the 1990s. As I remember it in from the 1970s it was a 2-story house with a small farmhold. Jack, my granddad's brother, lived here on his own he never married.

I remember visiting Jack many times my memories of him are as being very friendly. He taught me how to play chess and draughts.

Written by Tom Dowling:-

Julia was also known as Shelia. I met Shelia many times at my grandparents’ house. Shelia moved to London and married Harry (I think that was his name) Styles - they both visited my grandparents many times. Harry was a messenger in the battle of the Somme in 1916 aged 12! My granddad asked him once to tell me stories of the war.

I remember them as a polite and very proper couple. They had two sons I think Bernard and Francis.

Written by Tom Dowling:-

Thomas (Tom) moved to Clough, was married there and had a daughter that my Uncle Frank knew of. They later moved to London and when Frank moved to the UK. My grandfather Din suggested that Frank stay with Tom, a small-time builder. According to Frank, staying with Tom came with strings! This meant Frank ended up working with Tom's company and working weekends which is not what Frank signed up for, so Frank moved on.

Written by Tom Dowling:-

Philip Tierney was born in 1815 and died of gunshot wounds to the head.

Philip married Mary Guilfoyle on 16 February 1858 and had six Children: James born in 1859, Denis born in 1860, Ellen born 1862, Francis born in 1865, then Philip was killed and two children were baptised after his death... John in 1866 and Mary in 1868. Only Mary has a note from the priest that the baptism is ''Postamores" (after death of) "father shot supposed by Scotch Villains on his way to a mi? "

Mary was not born at the time of her father’s Philip’s murder born on 19th December 1868. What a Christmas that must have been. After the murder the family moved to Lisheen, Thurles, Tipperary.
-
There appear to be a number of court cases involving Philip Tierney of Dromard, Tipperary around the time but it is unclear whether ANY of these relate to this Philip Tierney. It certainly appears that, at least, some relate to another Philip Tierney in the locality indicating caution is required for future assumptions. While the offences are, in retrospect, not particularly serious they would be the sort of incidents that grudges are made of.
-
An article from the Leinster Express on Saturday 11th July 1868 stated:
“An inquest held before J.H. Owen Esq. is to the effect that a 10’ clock a labouring man named Philip Tierney was seen by a woman leaving the home of a cousin by his named Meehan and entered Lisduff wood on the Errill side. Soon after the woman heard a shot from that direction (blurred words I can’t read).

Tierney was not a poacher or never suspected of poaching by Holmes or any keeper in Lisduff (previously it was misstated that Tierney was a poacher). Matthew H. Frank for Lisduff Estate corrected the testimony. He (Tierney) sometimes turns in a horse to the plantation to graze which Homes informed me when he became Keeper. I desired him not to mind the horse until the bounds fence was repaired. Late in the day friends of the deceased became anxious as to his whereabouts and a search was instigated when the body of Tierney was discovered lifeless stretched on a pathway leading through the wood.

When examined two bullets one larger than the other lodged in his brain, while a third had penetrated through his forehead. Holme’s
home was searched, and a double-barrel shotgun was found one of the barrels appeared to have been recently discharged. There were also a couple of pistols some of which seemed to have been used for some time. Along with some lead bullets of 2 different sizes. In addition to these facts, it was stated at the inquest that it may have been caused by a pistol being placed close to the man’s head by evidence of the amount of hair singed.

The verdict returned at the inquest was the deceased Philip Tierney came by his death between the morning of the 5th and the 6th by a wound inflicted on his head by bullets fired by some person or persons unknown. We learn that the deceased was to start
for America in a short time.

The right honourable J.W. Fitzpatrick MP (Lisduff House) has offered a reward of £100 reward for any such person or persons who shall give such information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of the murderer. The gamekeeper was taken to Portlaoise by the police at that time for his safety.

Despite the reward, no arrest or conviction was ever made, and it was very likely that the gamekeeper Holmes was the killer, and it was a personal grudge.
