Written by Tom Dowling:-
According to Mary O'Shea-McGrath, on a recent visit to Ballingarry in June 2024, her father 'Jim' O'Shea purchased the old Gortderrybeg Barracks (a ruin) for 60 pounds in early 1924. Its location was between St. Patrick’s Church, Couraguneen and Fiacri
House an area I would refer to as Clonkenny. Jim’s brother John, a carpenter and a friend, put a new roof on the house and a new staircase.
Eliza married James O’Shea on 27 November 1924 in the Church of Clonmore. Witnesses: Edward O'Shea & Katie Delaney.
Daughter Mary O’Shea McGrath was born in this house but Martin was born later.
A few years later the Loran Estate was going to be divided by the land commission. Dr Kennedy who was high up in the Department arranged that some of his extended family would get the land and they needed with clear possession. Jim and Elisa, with Mary only 2 years old, were evicted without recourse!
The O’Shea’s moved to Hockney’s and lived with an old relation who promised them the house when he died. Nothing was put in writing and the house was sold on his death. "Uncle Tom Dowling came down" and offered Jim & Eliza a room in Dromard, and the family were moved to Borrisoleigh (The O’Shea home) and went to school there. Later the O’Shea’s got a house in Cloone, near Templemore Station where the family lived for many years.
James and Eliza had three children: Mary, Maurice, and Martin.
In 1951 following the death of her Uncle Tom, Eliza and Jim purchased the house in Dromard from Tom’s widow Mary Ann.
Son - Martin O’Shea and his wife Mary (Maude) took over the Post Office in December 1963 and operated it until 1972. Martin and Maude) had seven children: Teresa (Tess), Maurice, Jimbo, Gary, P.J. Séan, Mary.

You have done incredible work. On my own family I have been working on this for over a year in a serious way and before that dipping in and out of it. I have attached a full document however the family tree starts on page 19. It has given me much satisfaction and the Uí Dúnlainge ancient history was an interesting surprise. Thanks for responding and I look forward to speaking to you in the near future.
