Find a Grave Obituary as at 28 March 2025:-
Traveling with family at the age of 8 he arrived in America at the start of the war of 1812. He was orphaned at 10, without any education and left with only his iron will he persevered and thrived, eventually obtaining the position as superintendent of a New York manufacturing facility. In NYC he met and married Jane Chambers, they had several children there and in 1829 he began to seek a home outside the city. John’s brother had drowned falling off a ship up the Hudson River, while looking at property for them to purchase and was never found. John and Jane with their small family settled in Coolbaugh TWP. Monroe County, in the village of Tobyhanna Mills, in which he cleared the timber, erected a small cabin and eventually cleared up enough area to start a farm. “Having learned from the sad experience the pitiable condition and almost absolute helplessness of those who are thrown upon the cold charity of an unfeeling world, at an early age, without the advantages which a good education affords and not knowing what might be the fate of his children, he determined to spare no pains to give them such an education, at least, as this region of country would afford at the time, and limited means at his disposal would permit.” - E.H. Heller
John was Justice of the Peace of Coolbaugh TWP. For 19 years and had 10 children that I am aware of, most reaching adulthood and surviving passed their parents passing. He was loved and respected by many, he was fortunate enough to be able to provide a comfortable and happy life for his family. He was a member of the “Old Fellows” and faithful member of the Protestant Episcopal Church. He survived his wife Jane by 15 months, and at age of 69 passed away.

Find a Grave Obituary as at 28 March 2025:-

Born in the county Fermanagh, in February 1803 she remained in Northern Ireland to attend her elderly Grandmother Sarah McCoy and upon her passing traveled to America in 1818, reuniting with her family that had traveled to NYC in 1812. She met and married John Page Dowling in New York City, having several children there before relocating to Coolbaugh TWP., Monroe County, Pennsylvania. They encountered many hardships, but persevered through all, and were prosperous enough to shelter, provide and educate their family of 10 known children, 8 were remaining after their parents passing. Jane Chambers Dowling was a devoted Christian and loving wife and a faithful consistent member of the Protestant Episcopal Church, she lived her life with honor and usefulness. She suffered a long painful illness at her end, which claimed her life at the age of 68 years, with a large concourse of mourning relatives and friends following her to her final resting place in 1872.
