E. J. DOOLING FORMER TAX RECIEVER OF DOOLY COUNTY DIED SATURDAY
Death of Prominent man leaves only one survivor of Civil War in County
Edwin Joseph Dooling, 87, of Dooling, died Saturday at his home of the infirmities of old age, the most immediate cause of death being kidney trouble.
Mr. Dooling was one of the two remaining Confederate veterans in Dooly County, where he had lived all his life, and was a one time tax receiver for a number of years for the County. He was a member of the Methodist Church, to which organization he was faithful throughout his life, and took an active interest in the civic affairs of his community as long as his health would permit.
Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist Church of Dooling Saturday afternoon, Rev. E. A. Martin, of Pinehurst, having charge of the rites, and internment was made in Jenkins cemetery. "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" was sung by a choir composed of Misses Eunice Patrick, Ollie Ruth Jones, Mary Will Peterman, Mary Daves, Virginia Jenkins, and Janette Jenkins. The accompaniment was played by Miss Mattie Jenkins. Pallbearers were Cecil M. Clewis, J. R. Clewis, Jr., DeWitt Clewis, Carl Clewis, Tom P. Sangster, and Cornelius Patrick. Funeral arrangements were in charge of Akin Funeral Home.
Surviving Mr. Dooling are the following: One son, Robert L. Dooling,; Three daughters, Mrs. A. H. Joiner, Unadilla; Mrs. R. C. Weaver, Miami, Fla.; Mrs. J. R. Clewis, Pinehurst; and several nieces and nephews who reside in Georgia and Florida.
Mr. Dooling's passing leaves only one Confederate veteran in the county, James Dupriest, whose home is at Unadilla. [Most likely Mr. Dooling's death was on Friday the 27th April 1934. He was buried Saturday 28th April 1934 afternoon.]
