Find a Grave Obituary as at 10 July 2025:-
"Excerpt from 2015 genealogy post (online) by descendant Michelle Thornbury of Michigan:
"Katherine (Kate) J. Dowling was placed in charge of Central Library and retained that post for 25 years until it was abolished by the Board of Education. She was a genuine lover of books. "Mrs. Dowling will doubtless find her new situation a congenial one, and as a kindly mannered and accomplished lady, she will doubtless fill it acceptably with the public."
Mrs. Dowling told reporters "I trust that I may live to see the consummation of my greatest
desire: a reading room provided for the children. This room should be used exclusively for the books and periodicals suitable for children. The present space is entirely inadequate to accommodate the children. It is also impossible to wait on them properly, and there is no chance whatever to give them advice regarding reading."
She loved literature and poetry and belonged to the Ignorance Club. She wrote and published a History of Rochester and a History of Dublin (New York). In addition, she translated and published several French works. In 1881 the School Board elected her assistant librarian at the library in the Rochester Free Academy."

..."fords, he was compelled to succumb. He was born in this city, March 17, 1835, at the residence of his father, James Dowling, a much respected and early settler, whose home stood on the site of that of the deceased.
When his school boy days had closed, he became a clerk in the grocery house of Joseph Cochrane, with whom he remained a number of years. Then, in company with Timothy Donoghue, he began the grocery business a what was then 28 Main Street.
In 1856 he married the daughter of Daniel Sharp, of Greece. In 1862 he was elected a member of the board of supervisors from the fifth ward. In this year came the call for volunteers for the war. He was among the first to respond. Organising company K, of the 140th regiment, he moved with it to the seat of war.
After several months' service he fell sick and was brought back home, where for a long time he was confined to his house by typhoid fever. This rendered him physically unable to attend to soldier duty and his resignation was sent in. He subsequently entered business life as a contractor, and under his supervision of the extension of the Charlotte pier was made. He took several important railroad contracts.
In 1876, he was appointed superintendent of the streets of this city, he being the first to hold that office under the executive board. This position he has since retained, executing his various duties in a most commanding manner.
A loving wife and seven children mourn the irreparable loss of husband and father. - Rochester Democrat.

Late September–November 1862 The 140th was assigned to Casey’s Division in the defensive fortifications around Washington, D.C. It was probably at this time that Patrick, and maybe several of his company, drank the water and contracted typhoid.

Some men kept diaries, which now offer vivid glimpses into their thoughts and routines.
In 1862, the 140th wore standard Union blue uniforms—frock coats, forage caps, and leather accoutrements ('Zouave' uniforms came later). Company letters (like “K”) were often stitched onto caps, a point of pride and identification. Soldiers took pride in their appearance, especially when stationed near the capital.
