Pat Dowling does not profess to be an expert but thinks that Irish spelling and grammar had not been standardised at that time. Pat says, Garrett Holahan signing his name in Irish would very much tie in with the Harpur family politics, they were very involved in the Irish War of Independence and subsequent Irish Civil War (even on opposing sides).

Summary:
James Harpur began his military journey in 1922 with the Dublin Guard, unknowingly launching a 38-year career that ended in 1960 as a Lieutenant Colonel—the longest-serving Defence Forces member at the time. Born in Dublin in 1902, Harpur came from a family deeply involved in the Irish revolutionary movement, with siblings active in Cumann na mBan and the IRA.

He joined the Volunteers in 1917 while still in school and later transferred to F Company, 1st Battalion, rising to 2nd Lieutenant. His early actions included raids for arms and disrupting British military parades. In 1920, Harpur joined the Active Service Unit (ASU), sacrificing his job to become a full-time guerrilla fighter. Under Oscar Traynor’s leadership, the ASU undertook high-risk ambushes and operations, relying heavily on local intelligence and street knowledge.

Harpur’s No. 4 Section was based in Dolphin’s Barn and participated in numerous ambushes, including attacks on British military vehicles and staff cars. Casualties were common, and Harpur’s home became a vital safe house and medical station, run by his dedicated sisters. He narrowly escaped capture by the feared Igoe Gang but was eventually arrested during the Burning and interned in Kilmainham Gaol, marking the end of his family’s safe house operations.

Jim Harpur rejoined the Dublin Guard after his release in December 1921 and sided with the pro-Treaty forces during the Civil War. He quickly rose through the ranks, participating in key operations like the assault on Kilkenny Castle and later serving as Captain and Company Commander. His brother Jack also joined the National Army, serving in Kerry before returning to civilian life.

Jim married Mae Wheatley in 1922, forming ties with other Old IRA families. The Harpurs had varied allegiances—his sisters Josie, Mary, and Kitty remained active in Republican circles, with Kitty even imprisoned for her anti-Treaty activities. Mary later married a pro-Treaty officer, resigning from Cumann na mBan.

Jim continued his military career through the Emergency years, eventually becoming Quarter Master of Western Command and O/C McKee Barracks. He retired in 1960 after 42 years of service, including his IRA years. He died in 1962 and was buried with full military honours. His widow Mae passed in 1982, having endured the loss of two children.

The Harpur family's legacy in Ireland’s military history remains strong, remembered fondly by descendants like granddaughter Cathy O’Driscoll.
