Find a Grave Obituary as at 29 April 2026:-
Post Standard, Syracuse, NY, Wednesday, December 27, 1972
George W. Walter, 63, city editor of the Oneida Daily Dispatch and author of four books about Central New York, died yesterday at State University Hospital.
A veteran newsman, he was the Oneida correspondent for the Post-Standard and later, correspondent for the Herald-Journal and Herald-American, gathering news and taking pictures. He previously was employed by the Mid-York Weekly, Hamilton. His latest book, "Saints and Sinners" was in proof form when he died. Final revisons were completed in September, shortly before he suffered a stroke.
George's other books are "The Loomis Gang," "Chenango Valley Tales" and "Chips and Shavings." Written during a 20-year period, the books deal chiefly with folk tales and history of Central New York.
Born in Little Falls, Mr. Walter lived in Morrisville before moving to Oneida 25 years ago. He was a member of the Madison County Historical Society and Oneida Moose Lodge 421. He was also active in the Oneida area Little Theater.
Mr. Walter's interests included gardening and cooking but he was known chiefly for his extensive collection of tape and phonograph recordings, which he traded with other enthusiasts around the world.
Mr. Walter's wife, the former Clarice Dougherty, died Aug. 1, 1971.
He is survived by two sons, the Rev. George W. Walter, Jr. of Canandaigua and Lance T. Walter of Syracuse; two stepchildren, Brian Madden of New York, formerly a newsman at WHEN-TV, and Mrs. Sandra McAllister of Verona; a stepsister, Inez Miller of Utica; a stepbrother, James Miller of California; and 11 grandchildren.
Mr. Walter's funeral was from the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Oneida. Burial was in the Crown Hill Memorial Park, Clinton, NY.
----
Liner notes from "Sinners and Saints Stories of Upstate New York":
George W. Walter has made history and folklore his principal hobby since he was a boy.
This is his fourth book. Mr. Walter was also an authority on the American Musical Theatre of the past and present. His collection of original cast records and recorded tapes of musical shows was known internationally. In his collection are found operettas from the Soviet Union, recordings from Lebanon, Australia, South Africa, England, Austria, Hungary and Germany.
A native of Little Falls, Walter had deep family roots in the Mohawk Valley. Members of his family have resided in the valley since 1709.
He was city editor of the Oneida Daily Dispatch from 1956 until his death. Previously, he served as managing editor of the Hamilton Republican and Madison County Leader before they were combined in the Mid-York Weekly and also served as Oneida editor of the Syracuse Post-Standard and Syracuse Herald-Journal.
His previous books are: "The Loomis Gang", "Chenango Valley Tales" and "Chips and Shavings."
