Find a Grave Obituary as at 23 June 2026:-

St Charles Union, St Charles MN, October 23 1896:

OBITUARY

Mr. Thomas Spencer died at the home of his son, William Spencer, on Friday evening, October 16th, 1896, at 7:00 o'clock, of diabetes, after an illness of three weeks, aged 71 years.

Mr. Spencer was born in Somersetshire, England, in 1825. Came to America in 1848 and settled in Onandago county, N. Y. He left there April 1st, 1856, and went to Iowa, where he spent a short time prospecting, but not finding anything there to suit him he came on to Minnesota, arriving here May 15th of the same year and settled on the farm now owned by his son, William, where he died.

Mr. Spencer was married to Bridget Dowling in 1848, to whom were, born six children —three sons and three daughters—three of whom survive him, George and William Spencer, of St. Charles, and Mrs. Samuel McElhaney, of Watertown, S. D. His wife died February 29th, 1888.

Being an old resident here, Mr. Spencer was well known to all and possessed many admirable traits of character. He was a good neighbor and a kind friend.

Funeral services were held at the residence of his son, William, on Tuesday. October 20th, 1886, conducted by Rev. O. H. P. Smith, and the remains laid to rest in Hillside cemetery.

All the surviving children were present at the funeral. One son, James, died at his home at Watertown, S. D., Saturday, Oct. 3rd—just two weeks previous—of typhoid fever, after a few days illness.
