Emma Charlotte HOBBS was born on 3rd November 1857 to Mr John and Mrs Emma HOBBS (formerly JONES). She was born at home at 37 Severn Street, St. Thomas's, Birmingham.

Emma married William Stephens on 6th January 1876. At marriage Emma stated she was 19 years old, a spinster and a Tailoress living at Summer Street, Birmingham with her father shown as John Hobbs a Tailor. Emma probably worked with her father.

They had at least one son Cyril Bertie on 28 September 1886 which he registered in Ladywood, Birmingham on 8th November 1886. He also had two daughters May and Amy.

Their address was 106 Carver Street, Ladywood, Birmingham, Warwickshire on 8 November 1886 when William registered the birth of Cyril Bertie.

William STEPHENS was shown as deceased at the time of son Cyril's marriage on 6th February 1921 but Emma's death is not yet known.

Unconfirmed. Cyril Stephens is strongly of the opinion that this is Bertie's mother but is not sure.

Stanley aged 12 in 1939 was, according to the register, with John Frederick Hughes, his wife Anne Elizabeth Aucock and son Ronald Frederick Hughes in Brighton. This family do not appear related to the Pepper of Sullivan name. The first wave of child evacuations in World War II came on 1 September 1939 so Stanley is likely to have been one of the first children, with gas-mask and name label, to be evacuated from London to the 'country' due to threats of bombing from Nazi Germany.

Later Stanley bucked family tradition and, instead of joining the Royal Navy as his father and brothers, joined the British Army Blues and Royals. Stanley was a Squadron Sergeant Major when he retired.

Stanley was to pass away on 8 October 1996, 6 months after his daughter Jennifer's marriage in 1996.
