From K Doolan, 31 Wantage Road, Carrville, Durham, DH1 1LP. 25 September 1999.
Letter stated that Mary Daly had "various spellings". "It appears that after leaving Ireland, probably because of the potato famine, the first record I have of them (James Doolan 1829) is living in Glossop, Derbyshire, before moving to the North West Durham area, living in a village called Bushblades, near West Stanley, Co. Durham. The village no longer exists and is now just open pasture land. My main interest in the family name was to find out who the actual ancestor was who came to England and, of course, everyone in the family could say it is an Irish name, but no one knew the actual person. "
"The deaths in 1867 of Margaret, John and Richard were because of Scarlatina. The surviving members of the family worked as Miners at the local colliery."

Subject: A Thought from a tombstone - Dooley/Hosey
Every so often - as I wander round a graveyard rattling off what I'm reading
on the stone - not thinking about what it is I'm reading and saying -I come
across somthing like this......
and then - when I'm typing up my tapes - I *hear* what it is I read.....it
sinks in....
and while its true to say that I rarely see this on a stone - the few times
I do it always makes me stop and think....
and it should really be everybody's thought about life...we never know the
minute we will end up in the same place as Patrick Dooley.
Jane :-)
Oops - for anyone who might be looking for him - he is buried in the
graveyard in Ballacolla, Co. Laois - between Abbeyleix and Rathdowney....
and a / indicates a new line on the stone.

Moved to London in 1780; was for several years manager of the British Library at 132 Strand, and was involved in publishing The World, and Fashionable Advertiser from its inception on I Jan. 1787 at the paper's commercial office in Exeter Change, Strand. He took a lease on 5 College Green on 17 Sept. 1798 and moved his library there. On 22 Nov. 1799 he sub-leased the office and library though retaining some of the former for his writing and publishing activities. He reported debates in the Irish parliament, and was the publisher, editor and principal author of a satirical periodical on it entitled Proceedings and Debates of the Parliament of Pimlico, Nos 1-28,1799-1800, and its sequel The Olio, or, Anything-arian Miscellany, Nos 1-6, 26 Mar. to 12 Apr. 1800; wrote numerous political broadside ballads and jeux d'esprit against the impending Union with Britain. On 26 Aug. 1800 both his own lease and the sub-lease were terminated, and during that month he took his family to London, where he was listed as a bookseller and patent medicine vendor at 30 Lincoln's Inn Fields 1804-07. He was for many years a parliamentary reporter and contributed to The Times and other periodicals, residing at Bell's Buildings, Salisbury Square, and from about 1809, at 10 Trafalgar Place, Kentish Town, Middlesex.

Fortis et Egregious by Anthony Dowling - 1996:
"According to a family tradition the progenitor of the Dowlings of Ballyroan was a Castilian called Don Vincenza Dolinghos, a surgeon in the Spanish service who settled in Ballyroan, Queen's County, Ireland, during the reign of James II (1685-88). A descendant, presumably a grandson, Vincent Dowling, (called Vincent the elder in this book) married Mary Whelan of Maryborough, Queen's County, related to the Fitzgerald (later Lord Fitzgerald and Vesey) family, and had one son, Vincent (Vincent the younger)."

Subject: Dowlings in Laois
Bryan
I was really excited to stumble across your web site recently and here's
why:
I am Mark Dooling and I have traced my own roots back to late 1840s when my
g-g-g-grandmother, Elizabeth Dooling, widow oh Thomas Dooling, both from
Laois, came to England- Bradford specifically.
My family have been there ever since except some of my generation- I brought
my family down to Bracknell in Berkshire.
The point is though that if you have done a lot of research in Laois on the
Dowling name (which as we both know is connected to the Dooling name), you
may have uncovered valuable data on my family and as yet I don't even have
an exact location for them!
Better yet, we may even be connected judging by the some of the forenames
that are prevalent in your ancestry- Daniel and Thomas for instance keep
recurring throughout the generations of the Doolings in my family.
The one snag is I don't think my Thomas Dooling (g-g-g-g-grandfather) is the
same as yours as he seems to be from the previous generation (his son Daniel
was born in 1846 in Laois). Anyway, for what it's worth, I understand that
he was a stonemason.
I have quite a few web sites but the one with most info on my Dooling
ancestors is here: http://www.redblue.com/dooling and a Laois genealogy link
page I put together is here: http://www.redblue.com/laoisgen
I'm VERY KEEN to hear from you especially if you have come across anything
that may connect to my Doolings and/or help locate them. I certainly can
give you a much more ancient account of the Doolings and Dowlings dating
back to the first millenium- and it's very interesting (as the snippets on
my web site will show you) - there ARE royal connections would you believe?
Look forward to hearing from you
Kind regards

I just sent you a long mail and have a nasty feeling it went to the wrong
address- may have mis-spelled your name.
The bottom line is that I am Mark Dooling and have ancestors from Laois -
they came over to England in the 1840s - Elizabeth Dooling was my
g-g-g-grandmother and came over with her toddler son Daniel in late 1840s
from Laois but I don't know exactly where in Laois they came from. Elizabeth
was the widow of Thomas Dooling and I have been researching for over 20
years but never yet had a chance to take the Irish connection further
(although I know a lot of the ancient stuff).
I have web sites at http://www.redblue.com/dooling and
http://www.redblue.com/laoisgen - I think you have "borrowed" a graphic from
the latter (-; That's okay - you have my blessing!
Even better if it winds up that we are connected!
Cheers for now

Hi Brian
I have given some answers (interleaved (removed))....
Going on what I know about Elizabeth who was listed as in her early 20s (24
I think- I'll check) in 1851, I would say that it is highly likely that
Daniel (born 1846) was their first and only son....especially since no other
children are documented in Bradfors through the decades that follow on the
census.
I would put the couple's ages (Elizabeth and Thomas) at 18-20 in 1846.
I would estimate Thomas' birth date at 1825/6 therefore. There is the remote
possibility that he was a lot older than Elizabeth of course (looking
through LDS records, I have found one or two examples to base this
hypothesis on) and that maybe even she was his second wife.
This would mean his birth date could go back anything up to about another 30
years to late 1790s.
BUT, based on the limited info I have, I would State that the greater
probability is that he was born c. 1825
I keep promising to do that with a whole range of sites I have. The simple
answer is yes. The difficult question is "when?" Soon I hope!
Haha. Figures! In fact that whole site on the royal lineage belongs to
somebody else- I think I took a copy/dump and reproduced it.
The source is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlkik/
but you have to dig deep....the actual pages are:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlkik/kilkings.htm#osraige
Thanks for the response- hopefully you may be able to unearth some tenuous
link- then I can move on- I have been stalled here for some years (-;
Mark

Looking for history of my greatgrandparents, James and Mary Dowling of Dublin or (possibly County Cork). They gave birth to my grandfather, John Dowling who immigrated to New York with a brother Patrick Dowling (a jockey). He had a sister, Elizabeth (a nurse)and another sister, Mary (who emigrated around 1930: married Bob Collins, settled in Brooklyn, NY). If you have any info on James and Mary Dowling, it would be appreciated. Thank You !
