He is referred to as the "late James Oaks" in the 1872 record of death of his daughter, Melvina Oakes.

Citation Detail: Original Message:- From: Michael Ellen Carling, OP (mailto:email address); Sent: 05 September 1999 01:31; To: 'email address'; Subject: Dowling I came across your information on the familytreemaker site. I am descended from Mary Ann Dowling and James Oakes. They had a son Charles who had a son Henry who had a daughter Margaret - who is my mother. Do you know where Dennis Dowling came from in Ireland? I have been in touch with Donald Dowling who also lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan - which is where I live. Your information is excellent. My information says that Mary Ann Dowling was born in 1800 I don't have my information with me at the present time, but I think she died in 1878. Charles (1828-1905) Henry (1864-1936) Margaret (1907-1995) Henry was born in Bayham Township, Elgin County, Ontario. He came to Michigan to work in the lumber woods. I was born in 1933. Mary Margaret Carling, now Sister Michael Ellen Carling,O.P. I enjoyed looking at all of the work that you have done. Thank you!
