Alfred Augustus McLean was the son of Edward McLean and Elizabeth Ann Lewis. Born in New York, he came to San Francisco with his family in the early 1850s. He began his working career as a printer.
He first married Ella Louisa Magruder Whiting on 1 Feb 1864 in the District of Columbia while serving as a private in Co L of the Mass 2nd Cav. It is unclear when precisely he divorced; however, on 5 Jun 1866 he married Towena Violet Margaret Dowling in Alameda, California. Alfred's 3rd wife Jennie stated in a news article that he had deserted Ella and he and Towena had to remarry after the divorce from Ella finally came through. Towena and Alfred divorced in the late 1870s.
On 4 July 1880 he married Jeanette I. (Jennie) Meickell (1861-?) daughter of William Meickell (1828-1894) and Margaretta (Maggie) E. Unknown (1835-1895). She claimed later that she was only 15, however the 1870/80 census records make it clear that she was at least 18 at the time. They had five known children together (Jennie May 1881-1881, Alfred William 1882-1962, Baby 1886-?, Ethel Clara 1890-1934, and Florence Blanche 1893-1972) and divorced in June 1891. During their time together, he used the title "professor" and was frequently listed in the newspapers as a physician and specialist based on the patent of a new truss. I have found no record of a degree and while he may have had a truss business, his occupation on all of his census records is printer.
The couple became well known in the newspapers for their many fights over child support and custody. Jennie had remarried and her husband had taken their infant child and departed as she and Alfred fought amid claims of violence and unfit parenting. Son Alfred W. departed home at 16 and joined the military while Ethel Clara and Florence Blanche were removed by order of the court and went to live with Alfred's sisters Caroline Dwinelle and later with Josephine Phelps. I've been unable to locate Jennie (Meickle) McLean Himmelmann after 1899.
While it appears Alfred A. remained close with his son Alfred W. as they are found together on the 1900 census, his relationship with his youngest daughter may not have been as good. The newspaper articles concerning his daughter Florence's 1911 marriage indicate that she was given away by another relative and stated that she'd lived with her aunt Josephine since "the death of both her parents."
On 9 Jun 1905 Alfred married for a 4th time. Minnie Louise (Carter) Day was the daughter of David and Celia (Jones) Carter and they remained together until her death. Interestingly, he appears as Dr. Alfred A. McLean on his wife Minnie's funeral home record, but on his own his occupation is listed as "Retired Printer' and lists his service was paid for under the auspices of the GAR and Typographical Unions #21. According to his funeral home record, Alfred was cremated with his ashes interred by Cypress Lawn. His obituary listed his three surviving children.
