Just wanted to send my best. I think you’re doing a great job, I’ve only been trying to research my Dowling roots for a couple of months and have found it quite challenging. I feel I will have to bite the bullet one day and make a trip to Ireland or enlist the services of a professional genealogist to further my research. My confirmed information is a marriage certificate of my grandfather Albert Victor Edward Hutton Dowling to Agatha Taylor in Australia 1927 and a true copy of Albert's Baptism/birth on 07/11/1890 in the Church of Ireland (Protestant) Parish / District: DALKEY Co. Dublin. Both documents State Charles as father, his occupation as Surgeon and the Baptism papers add dentist. Both name Emily Florence Derrick as Mother. The marriage certificate also adds the abbreviation KT to Charles name, possibly Knights Templar? My desire is to find out if Charles and Albert had any siblings as my family line is without branches that I know of. Thank you for your time in reading my thread.

Manchester Regiment during World War 1
Since 1815 the balance of power in Europe had been maintained by a series of treaties. In 1888 Wilhelm II was crowned ‘German Emperor and King of Prussia’and moved from a policy of maintaining the status quo to a more aggressive position. He did not renew a treaty with Russia, aligned Germany with the declining Austro-Hungarian Empire and started to build a Navy rivalling that of Britain. These actions greatly concerned Germany’s neighbours, who quickly forged new treaties and alliances in the event of war. On 28th June 1914 Franz Ferdinand the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne was assassinated by the Bosnian-Serb nationalist group Young Bosnia who wanted pan-Serbian independence. Franz Joseph's the Austro-Hungarian Emperor (with the backing of Germany) responded aggressively, presenting Serbia with an intentionally unacceptable ultimatum, to provoke Serbia into war. Serbia agreed to 8 of the 10 terms and on the 28th July 1914 the Austro-Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia, producing a cascade effect across Europe. Russia bound by treaty to Serbia declared war with Austro-Hungary, Germany declared war with Russia and France declared war with Germany. Germany’s army crossed into neutral Belgium in order to reach Paris, forcing Britain to declare war with Germany (due to the Treaty of London (1839) whereby Britain agreed to defend Belgium in the event of invasion). By the 4th August 1914 Britain and much of Europe were pulled into a war which would last 1,566 days, cost 8,528,831 lives and 28,938,073 casualties or missing on both sides.

The Regiment formed an extra 38 battalions in addition to the pre-war establishment of two Regular and two Militia and six Territorial Battalions, this was mainly due to the Index: Volume of volunteers, it was awarded 72 Battle Honours and 11 Victoria Crosses losing 1,3770 men during the course of the war.

22nd (Reserve) Battalion (7th City)
21.11.1914 Formed by the City and Lord Mayor of Manchester, then moved to Morecambe and then on to Grantham in April 1915, where they joined the 91st Brigade of the 30th Division.
10.08.1915 Taken over by the War Office and moved to Larkhill, Wiltshire in Sept 1915.
Nov 1915 Mobilised for war and landed Boulogne.
20.12.1915 The 20th transferred to the 22nd Brigade and the 21st transferred to the 91st Brigade of the 7th Division and where it was engaged in various actions on the Western Front including;

The Battle of Albert, The Battle of Bazentin, The Battle of Delville Wood, The Battle of Guillemont, Operations on the Ancre
During 1917
The German retreat to the Hindenburg Line, The Arras offensive, The Battle of Polygon Wood, The Battle of Broodseinde, The Battle of Poelcapelle, The Second Battle of Passchendaele.
Nov 1917 Moved to Italy in an effort to strengthen the Italian resistance to the Austria-Hungary army.

Hello Brian,

I received your posting today and will respond with monies shortly. Yes I tried several sites on the web for info, the more sticks in the fire the brighter the blaze. No responses thus far. Though I did purchase my father’s sisters death certificate from the NSW registry. Eileen Agatha Hutton Dowling passed away on the 26thSeptember 1928, she was only 10 days old, very sad. I wonder what might have happened if she had lived. The certificate notes Albert a poultry farmer, he seems to have been a bit unstable.

I wonder if things would have been different if Eileen had survived? Agatha and Albert were divorced on the 27thApril 1932, Agatha then married Charles Knott on the 21stDecember 1937. Over a few beers one night Dad told me he lived in an Orphanage while his mother stayed at a women’s hostel in Sydney while she was working.

Even after the marriage to Charles and the move to Cairns Nth Queensland Dad was sent away to a boarding school in Charters Towers. Charles did not adopt Dad, even though Dad used the name Knott, changing his name legally when he joined the Air Force because his name did not correspond with his birth certificate. Charles passed away in the late eighties, and each of Dads 4 half siblings received ¾ of a million dollars each from his estate, Dad received nothing. I suppose my desire to find identity stems from the hurt I perceive that Dad felt but was reluctant to tell about, he being excluded by his family.
