'Happened on your information and thought, perhaps, I would send this
little bit of info. I am the daughter of the late Marcus Holt Dowling,
who was the son of Edward Thomas Dowling of Shreveport, LA (but born in
Memphis, TN). E. T. Dowling had a sister, Nell Dowling-Sullivan (last
known living in the early 1940's in Memphis, Tennessee). Nell and
Edward were the children of Toheon Dowling originally from somewhere in
Ireland. I heard years ago Toheon married an O'Shaughnessy and that
they were from the southeast part of Ireland, coming to the United
States through the Port of Boston. I have precious little information
about the Dowlings. 'Any of this connected to you in any way?

Subject: Re: a Dowling - Some More Information
How nice to receive such a quick response! I finally have info. for you but as I think I already mentioned I know very little about my father's side of the family (Dowlings in particular). In his later years Daddy did from time to time pass along little tidbits but I think what he knew was pretty limited. Anyway, here goes:
I am Susan Elizabeth Dowling-Reuterskiold (12-13-47). My parents: Marcus Holt Dowling (4-11-09 to 8-31-86) and Carrie Elizabeth Rice-Dowling. I am an only child. My father's parents; Edward Thomas Dowling (est. born 1873 in Memphis, Shelby County, TN, died in Lufkin, Angelina County, TX 11-2-33) and Carrie Cooper Holt-Dowling. As best as I can figure they were married in late 1901 in Houston, TX. They had four children. The first, a girl, died at birth (something I found within the last few years. I don't believe my father was aware of this child.) William Edward (Ed) (don't have birth date but could get, died in Shreveport, LA, 7-4-1983). Uncle Ed did not marry until his 50's; he married a widow with three grown children. My dad was next. Finally, the youngest was Mary Lydia who is also deceased now. She married a McLane and they had two sons. They live in Richardson, TX. I believe William Edward, Marcus Holt, and Mary Lydia were born in Shreveport, LA (or possibly Lufkin, TX).
Marcus and Ed died in Shreveport.
Now for Toheon Dowling, the father of Edward Thomas Dowling. I got this name off a copy of the Death Certificate for E. T. Dowling. Toheon's birthplace on this Certificate is listed as Ireland. His mother's name and birthplace are shown as "Don't Know". E. T. Dowling's wife provided what information there was on the Certificate. The two things my father told me repeatedly through the years were that he remembered hearing the family came from the southeast part of Ireland and the maiden name of his father's mother was O'Shaughnessy.
My dad also talked about his father's parents coming to the States through the Port of Boston and that we had some relatives in Boston. Toheon and wife apparently went to Memphis, TN, and I assume their children were born there. My dad told me they and an older brother of Edward Thomas died in a yellow fever epidemic. I do know there was a sister, Nell, who married a Sullivan, and lived in Memphis as late as the fall of 1942 (this is the year my father's Mother died and I found a sympathy card from Nell Sullivan postmarked in Memphis).
This is about the only other thing I know. Edward Dowling, was born 2-12-1820. He came to the States from Ireland. It is believed he was the brother of Toheon. He apparently went to St. Louis, Missouri. He died there 1-13-1899 (I have a Death Certificate and some other documentation). He married a Mary Hughes. They had at least one child, a daughter, whose name was Annie Dowling.
I also show a last name of Dwyer which I assume was a married name. She eventually became Sister Mary Justine Dwyer so I guess she became widowed at some point and became a nun. She was born 5-17-1853 and died 5-21-1901. My father remembered there were relatives in the St. Louis area so I imagine his father must have talked about them.
Well, this is about all I know. I hope you can make some sense out of it. I
look forward to sometime finding a message from you that you have come across something useful for me. I thank you.

Sorry Brian,
In looking back that was written in kind of a mess. What I was trying to say at that time Of course I know my fathers name Harold Dowling, and my Grandfather David Dowling (born Aug 26, 1892 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri, (died in Modesto CA 1975)-My G.Grandfather Silas Dowling ( I always get the greats mixed up when going backwards) born 1850, died April 18, 1930 Klamaths Oregon.
Buried in the Linkville Cemetery, Klamath Falls. I went to Klamath Falls saw the grave and got a better date of death. Contacted a newspaper in Klamath Falls and asked for the obit for Silas which stated he was born in Marietta, Ohio. None of my family had been able to give me much info. on Silas. With his obit in my hand I was able to look for his said birth place. On the census I sent you James F. is his father and Lewis and John are his uncles and the James I'm looking for in Northern Ireland is their father. There is still four other children of the Ireland James.
The second E-mail forwarded with info. is written by a lady who says that the father of Lewis on the census 1850 is her Great Great Grandfather, so I guess that makes us distantly related, and she's going to Scotland soon to do a search of records over there.
It's very confusing because they kept renaming their children--James,
John,Lewis all the way from Ireland through the years up to late 1800's
according to other searchers also in Ohio. It's hard to sort them out, but I
definitely didn't know any existed when I wrote you the first time. It was
Silas's Obituary that opened it up a little bit.
Thank you very much for keeping a watch on Antrim as a place of origin for
James Dowling. I just have a feeling that he did come from there somehow. Sorry
again for the messy work. Hope to talk again,
Debbie.

Hi Brian, I think I E-mailed you a while back. Probably months ago asking about Silas Dowling in Missouri and Oregon. You replied that you weren't familiar with the few names I had, but that you would start a one name file or something. Well I know more now, but am still stuck and trying to verify my last info., which leads me to Balling Loy (probably a misspell-Ballintoy)
Antrium, Ireland. Are you familiar with this area at all?
My problem--I think I originally told you about trying to find Silas in Missouri. Thru his obituary in Klamath Falls Oregon I now know that he was born in Mariette, Ohio in 1850. His parents were James F. Dowling and Jane Perkins, with many siblings, cousins, aunts and uncles. I wanted to know who James F. Dowling's father was. Through lookups in Washington County, Marietta, Ohio, I am being told that James F. Dowling's Father was James who was born in Ireland, Antrim Co., went to school in England, came back to Ireland and then on to New York--married Sally Harris, in 1809 had 7 children, some born in Seneca N.Y. and my James F. who was born in Fearing Twp. Marietta, Ohio. As I said before he was Silas's father and I found the whole family on a 1850 census for Washington Co. Ohio. The Ireland James Dowling set up one of the first
schools in Fearing Co. and taught for 12 years there among many other things. It says in the Williams history book for Washington Co. that he died in 1841.
The reason I'm trying to pick your brain again is that when I joined a list for Antrium a couple of people said the name didn't ring a bell for that area. How do I find out if there were ever Dowlings in Antrim in the 1700-1800's when nothing is showing. They are said to have some Scottish also. I've found so much info., now I am totally stopped I think.
Any knowledge or advice you could pass on would be appreciated. Thank you for listening. Deborah Davidson in Oregon

Hi again, This is where I first heard Balling Loy, Antrim. I think this was out of; the Williams book for "History of Washington County, Ohio. I'm trying to verify this by contacting the library for Washington Co. Ohio. Thank you, Debbie
-----------------Attachment--------------------
Hi Deborah,I had hoped to transfer a couple of charts from my Family Tree Maker program. It didn't work. I too am a beginner on computer.James Dowling from Balling Loy,Antrium Co. Ireland was the father of James Franklin Dowling. James, the father, married Sallie Harris of Providence RI in 1809. He and Sallie lived in Ovid Township Seneca Co. NY. They had 7 children.
Some children born in NY and some born in Fearing Township.Caywood is the community in Fearing that the family settled. It boarders on Marietta line.
James Franklin married Jane Perkins Feb.15, 1838. James and Jane had 5 children. They were Harriet b.1838, Madison b. 1841, Charlotte b. 1843, Lucinda b. 1847 and Silas b. 1850. The 1850 census listed the whole family but the 1860 of which I had page 326 of the census shows Silas at 10 living with a different family. The strange thing is that it shows a 4 year old boy by the name of James Franklin Britton and a 11 year old girl named Rosine Dowling. You need to find page 325 to solve that mystery. What happened to Silas's family and why did they go West? I am not sure you will find any Civil War information because the only Soldiers listed were James R. John W and Lewis who were sons of James Franklin's brother Lewis Blakely. If James Franklin had been in War he would have left a wife and 5 children home. I don"t have his birth date but he would have been older. Silas was too young as he would have been 15 or 16.
The first James Dowling was listed on a 1820 census in Fearing Township He was also described as a school master educated in England but coming from Ireland. I hope you enjoy this whole process of finding family. I didn't start early enough and my Dowling family were all gone by the time my interest developed. Lets keep in touch. I'd like to hear what you find about Silas and how your branch developed.
Two of the Civil War soldiers stayed in KY and one moved on to Florida. My husband and I lived in Hamilton ,Ohio for 15 years and if I had had the interest I could have had lots of sources for information .It is an exciting interest and I wish you happy hunting. Shirley I just found message from Alyssa who is conected to Washington Co Library .I didn't recognize her name in your note but saw that she had answered a question of mine.Isn't it great to have so
many working on this puzzle!

It's very confusing because they kept renaming their Children-- James, John,Lewis all the way from Ireland through the years up to late 1800's according to other searchers also in Ohio. It's hard to sort them out, but I definitely didn't know any existed when I wrote you the first time. It was Silas's Obituary that opened it up a little bit.
Thank you very much for keeping a watch on Antrim as a place of origin for James Dowling. I just have a feeling that he did come from there somehow. Sorry again for the messy work. Hope to talk again, Debbie.

Our great-grandmother was elizabeth dowling. we think she was born in
wisconsin. mary milligan or millikin was a sister. She had an uncle named thomas and "ezekil" sp? We don't know her parents' names. She married Joseph hammerly around 1879 we think. She died around 1956-57. They had 13 children, our grandmother being the middle child. If you think this branch of the Dowling's could be related please let us know Thanks, Marilyn and kathy

We have discussed w/ my mother some more information and what we have been
able to find out about my great grandfather. We believe he could very well
have been 1st generation from Switzerland. Entered in PA and taken my
great-grandmother to Wisconsin. But we are only begining to reardh. My
grandmother always said they were Pennsylvaina Dutch, a slang term for
German, but we are only going by the stories we remember.
Thanks,
Marilyn Henderson.
