Erna Mary Arens Dowling, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away quietly in her sleep on Monday, March 15, 2004. Mom, as so many called her, loved life, her family, friends; anyone who knew her was immediately called friend. We will all miss her beyond belief.
She was born in Wynot, Neb., to Fred. W. Arens and Laura Mary Suing on Jan. 25, 1922. She was the fifth child of in a family of six children. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Sr. Majella (Irene), and four brothers, Paul, Francis, George and Bruno "Joe" Arens. Her granddaughter, Jeannie Winford, predeceased her in July 2003.
Erna married Warren R. Dowling on Sept. 20, 1943. They met at a dance in Hartington, Neb., and were married three years later in Wynot. It was a wonderful affair where friends and family brought food, pot luck style, and provided a shiveree late at night to liven up the evening.
Erna is survived by her husband, Warren; her nine children and their spouses: David (Peggy Churchfield), Danda (James Winford), Susan (Tom Posey), Karen (Robert Farris), Daniel (Brenda Darlngton), Donna Sparks (Henry Lotz), Dennis (Lisa Reed), Dale, and Laura (Dean, Dowling).
She is also survived by her grandchildren: David Dowling Jr., Diana Dowling, Jullie Iverson (Robert Van Grieken), Jeffrey Iverson (Brandy Lund), Julia Nichols (Quinton Hart), Jason Winford (Mary Helvie), Nancy Posey (Greg Johnson), Julie Posey (Randy Schepper), Dan Posey (Minerva Giron), Ilene Cook (Reuben Howell), Dennis Cook (Shaina Young), Monica Farris (Adam Welch), Jenner Cook (Sean Arnott), Bobby Farris (Rebecca Piezer), Nicole (Sam Humphries), Sarah, Ashley, Danny (Meghan Willis) and Michelle Dowling, Derek Darlington, Garry Lee Sparks II (Amy Marie Cable), Jessica Oliver, Nicholas Reed, Trinity and Daniel Manies.
Also surviving are her great grandchildren: Donovon and Jessie Iverson, Billie Jean Wenneker, Kalin Mitchell, Cody, Dalis and Tailer Lund, Jerry, Amber, Emily, Randy and Andy Baum, Jamie and Jesse Forney, Haylie Rose Hart, Laura Ann Lucretia Winford, Eric Fulkerson, Christopher Fulkerson, Thomas John Posey, Brennen and Alyx Howell, Katie Ann Newman, Vincent and McKenna Cook, Jacob and Gavin Arnott, Skylar Willis Dowling, Kellee Nicole Sparks, and Neo Jordan Manies.
Surviving are also Erna's nieces and nephews, Gary (Linda McComber), Marne and Sherry Arens (Steve Stricker), David Arens (Ann Gerdes), and sister-in-law Eleanor "Totsie" Arens.
Erna loved to do many things and she would drop whatever she was doing to help her children, a friend, a neighbor or her church. Erna's favorite thing to do was bowling, which she did three times a week up until her death. Last week, she bowled at 200 game of which she was very proud considering she was 82 years old. She and her partner placed fourth in the doubles event just two weeks ago. Erna was the secretary of the Monday night bowling league for almost 40 years. She never gave up trying, even when she was injured. She once bowled left handed after breaking her arm. She was called Toulouse la Truck by her daughters, because when she threw her ball it hit the pins like a truck. When she wasn't bowling, she and Warren were playing cards with their friends or family. Her favorite game was sheep head, a game she learned when she was only 4 years old. She also played poker, spades and any other game anyone wanted to play.
Erna was the belle of the ball. She loved to give parties; hosted every holiday gathering and delighted in helping her kids cook up a surprise birthday or anniversary party. She made sure that there was cake and ice cream for every birthday. She cooked up a storm for all of them. She always said "the more the merrier" and "just add another potato to the pot." This happened often when her kids brought home every kid on the block. The Dowling house was the place to be for homemade bread, dough, dough gobs and especially her cinnamon rolls. But she was never too busy to stop what she was doing to play a game with her husband, kids, grandkids or great-grandkids. She never "let" anyone win, even the 4-year-old. They had to beat her on their own. Puzzles were her greatest challenge. Her family and friends would work overtime to find the most difficult puzzles for her to tackle. She would say "you hate me, don't you?" and then would laugh loudly.
Erna loved trivia. She had a stack of books that gave her answers about the presidents, geography, spelling and everything and anything a person could think of. Numbers were her game. She would count the numbers up steps up the hill to her daughter's home, or exactly how many miles it was from point A to point B. Things were never boring in Erna's house.
In 1988, Erna was diagnosed with cancer of the colon which spread to her liver. Fighter that she was, she beat the disease but the fight resulted in heart complications that led to her death. Her family is so thankful that they had these last 15 years.
Erna and Warren always had an open-door policy and it was a strange day when there was no one at home. Many neighbor kids called her house home and still do today. She was never too busy for any of them.
Erna was a fine seamstress, making wedding dresses, leather jackets and men's suits. She would tackle any sewing project, even re-designing an 1890s dress for a wedding. In her younger years, she re-upholstered furniture to bring in more money to help support her family. She worked tirelessly for her church on hot dog days and was the church organist for many years at St. Apollinaris. For 17 years, she and Warren operated the bingo game to raise funds for the future building of the new St. A's church.
Warren and Erna loved their trips to Alaska. They were planning a trip this summer. But most of the time she preferred to stay at home with her family and friends.
Erna had many wonderful talents which her family and friends were so fortunate to have been on the receiving end. She loved to laugh and have fun.
A rosary will be held Thursday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m., at the Claffey and Rota Funeral Home, 1975 Main St., Napa.
A funeral mass and celebration of Erna's life will be held March 19, at 10 a.m., at St. Apollinaris Catholic Church, 3700 Lassen St., Napa.
The family request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation or the charity of your choice.

NAPA, Calif.---Erna Mary Arens Dowling, 82, died March 15, 2004, at her home in Napa, Calif.
A rosary was held March 18 at Claffey and Rota Funeral Home, Napa.
A funeral Mass and celebration of Erna's life was held March 19 at St. Apollinaris Catholic Church, Napa.
Erna loved to do many things and would drop whatever she was doing to help her children, a friend, a neighbor or her church. She was the church organist at St. Apollinaris for many years. She and her husband operated the bingo game for 17 years raising funds for the future building of the new church.
Erna bowled three times a week, just two weeks ago bowled a 200 game and she and a partner placed fourth in a double event. She was secretary of the Monday night bowling league for almost 40 years. She loved to give parties, host holiday gatherings and delighted in helping her children cook up surprise birthday and anniversary parties. She was never too busy to stop and play games with husband, children, grandkids and great-grandchildren. She never let them win, they had to beat her on their own. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Sr. Majella (Irene) and four brothers, Paul, Francis, George and Bruno "Joe" Arens and her granddaughter, Jeannie Winford, in July 2003.

Elno Harrison Kinkaid, son of G.H. and Eva (Hughes) Kinkaid was born March 4, 1925, near Randolph.
He graduated from Liberty High School near Pleasant Valley.
He was married to Barbara Dowling on June 22, 1947, at the Congregational Church in Hartington. Five children were born to them: Dennis, Dayle, Brad, JoAnn and Scott.
He lived in the Pleasant Valley area until July, 2015, when he moved to Countryside Villa, in Wausa.
Elno was a member of Wausa United Methodist Church where he and Barb transferred their membership in 1971.
His life revolved around three things: family, faith and farming. He was very proud of his extended family and enjoyed playing cards and visiting with friends and family. A good neighbor to all, he was grandpa to generations of youngsters in the area.
Elno was active in his church, where he was lay leader for many years and ushered for countless funerals.
He watched agriculture evolve from picking corn by hand with a team and wagon to driving a computerized twelve-row combine, and was always interested in innovation and education.
Elno served in the United States Army from 1945-1947 and was part of the army of occupation in Japan. He later was involved in the VFW Post 5824 in Wausa.
He died July 6, 2017, at Faith Regional Hospital in Norfolk at the age of 92.
Survivors include Denny and Dee Kinkaid of Columbus, Dayle and Carmella Kinkaid of Elgin, Brad Kinkaid and Deb Bockus of Roberts, Wis., JoAnn and Dan Moseman of Firth and Scott and MeLea Kinkaid of Hartington; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sister Elaine Wakeley of Wausa; and brothers Rodney and Rosann Kinkaid of Terrell, Texas, and Elton and Jinny Kinkaid of Fountain Valley, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara, in February 2006.
