Lela C. (Dowling) Jones, daughter of Lester and Nellia (Dewhirst) Dowling, was born September 5, 1920, at Colby, Kansas. Lela died Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at Providence Medical Center in Wayne, Nebraska.
As a young child, Lela moved with her family to Nebraska, where she attended rural school along Pearl Creek, near the family home west of Coleridge, in southern Cedar County, Nebraska. On April 30, 1938, Lela was married to Eli Samuel Jones at Wayne, Nebraska. The couple was blessed with 11 children: Duane, Marilyn, Rich, Harold, Dean, Leonard, Karen, Eli Junior "Sam", Terry, Alice, and Tom. Lela and Eli raised their family in Laurel, Nebraska; a place that Lela would call home the rest of her life. Besides being a full-time mother to eight boys and three girls, Lela also helped her husband by answering phones for his trucking business. After Eli's death on December 29, 1966, Lela became the sole caregiver and parent to their younger children. As the youngest of the kids grew up and began their adult lives, Lela began working out of the family home; first at the nursing home in Laurel, and later, at a café.
In her spare time, Lela enjoyed quilting, sewing, and making ceramics. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and Lela was also involved with the Red Hat organization. She was a loving, caring, strong woman, who was a great wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.
Left to cherish Lela's life and memory are: children, Marilyn Jensen of Laurel, Nebraska, Dean (wife Sharon) Jones of Laurel, Nebraska, Leonard (wife Jeannie) Jones of Wayne, Nebraska, Terry (friend Sherry) Jones of Colorado, Alice (husband Pete) Roberts of Wayne, Nebraska and Tom Jones and wife of Colorado; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; brother, Leonard (wife Evelyn) Dowling of Randolph, Nebraska; sisters, Jennie (husband Denton) Hiatt of Norfolk, Nebraska, Gladys Patent of Randolph, Hilda of Michigan, and Shirley of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and a host of relatives and friends.

Kenneth was born September 4, 1923 in Thomes, Kansas to Lester H. and Nellie L. (Durhurst) Dowling.
World War II broke out, and Kenneth married Dorothy Whalen on June 14, 1944 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Randolph Nebraska.
He served in the US Navy from February 22, 1945 to March 30, 1946.
After Kenneth returned, together he and Dorothy owned and operated the bar in Martinsburg, Nebraska for ten years. Kenneth passed away in 1995.

Dorothy was born on August 3, 1925 in Sholes, NE, to Leonard and Lorna (Kinney) Whalen.
She graduated from St. Francis Catholic School in Randolph, NE.
She married Kenneth Dowling on June 14, 1944 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Randolph. Together they owned and operated the bar in Martinsburg for ten years. Kenneth passed away in 1995.
Dorothy was an honorary member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ponca. She enjoyed camping, fishing, crocheting and embroidery work, and was famous for her potato salad.
Dorothy M. Dowling, 92, of Martinsburg, NE passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at the Wakefield Health Care Center in Wakefield, NE.
Survivors include 4 sons, Francis Dowling of Wallace, NE, Ronnie and Darlene Dowling of Carl Junction, MO, Rick and Mikki Dowling of Wausa, NE, and Kenneth and Gloria Dowling of Allen, NE; 4 daughters, Cheri and Merle Krusemark of Wakefield, NE, Peg and Dick McCoy of Allen, NE, Cathy Pond of Martinsburg, and Sandy and Steve Sullivan, Sr. of Martinsburg, NE; 24 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Lorna Whalen; her husband, Kenneth Dowling; daughter-in-law, Diane Dowling; grandson, Chad Sullivan; and siblings, Virginia Brown, Geraldine Caster and Gene Whalen.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ponca, NE with Father Andrew L. Sohm officiating. Burial will be in Calvary at South Creek Cemetery in rural Ponca. Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., with a Rosary service at 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at Mohr Funeral Home in Ponca, NE.
